Based on the rules here:

Beater attack: can be any book read or currently being read within a QUAFFLE round. (meaning from the time a QUAFFLE is read till the time it is broken)

As the quaffle was broken prior to the beater finishing her attack and Michelle was not in possession of the quaffle, she was not knocked out.

message 31: by Deanna (last edited Jun 23, 2018 03:44PM) (new)

Deanna | 2962 comments Attack was announced in message 22 while the quaffle was whole.
Quaffle broke in message 26
Message 27 is simply the attack completion. (Poor wording on my part because I was in a hurry. Sorry.)

It is my understanding that an attack begun before the quaffle is broken can be announced as completed either before or after the quaffle breaks. I'll post for a mod decision.

message 32: by LaurLa (new)

LaurLa | 2055 comments Mod ruling (Shannon):

When the Quaffle is broken the current chain is void and the chasers are off their brooms until the Quaffle is fixed. The Beaters can only go after chains during a quaffe round. So if the attackers don’t finish until after the Quaffle is broken, that attack would be void as well. You can’t knock someone off their broom who isn’t on it, coupled with the Beater is no longer attacking during that Quaffle round.

Natalie | 974 comments

Message 16: Kate starts 518 page book at approximately 3:07PM EST (minimum reading time of 4 hours)
Message 25: Jenny knocks Kate off her broom at approximately 5:04 PM (1 hour and 57 minutes later)
Message 36: Emily reads Kate back into the game at approximately 8:38 PM
Message 37: Kate finishes book at approximately 8:39 PM

Based on Match 1 between Slytherin and Gryffindor, Chasers must cease reading once they are knocked off their broom. It was a bit of a tangled mess to figure out, but the final ruling (here) declared the goal void since the chaser kept reading after being knocked off the broom.

A 518 page book requires 4 hours of reading. Kate was knocked off the broom about 2 hours into reading and should not have continued until she was read back in based on the time rules implemented for this round.

message 40: by Deanna (new)

Deanna | 2962 comments We did not do this in the Ravenclaw / Hufflepuff game. This is the comment from Sonia that I remember. I don't think it is reasonable to expect chasers to both be reading books and checking for attacks.

Would it be acceptable if I strike the post and repost at what would be the 4 hour mark with a break for defense to make the times accurate assuming the quaffle is not broken?

message 41: by Natalie (new)

Natalie | 974 comments I said it was a bit of a tangled mess, but Sonia’s final ruling farther on down the page calls the goal void. I’ll let the mods/Sonia make the final ruling here as well.

My understanding is that Kate did continue reading past being knocked out which was stated as not allowable. We made the same argument regarding the chasers having to check their status.

message 42: by Deanna (new)

Deanna | 2962 comments I'm happy to adjust the announcement time to resolve this and put it in line with the 4 hour minimum if needed. Kate finished reading in under 3 hours. By my calculation that would be 2 hours 3 minutes after the posting of Emily's completion.

message 43: by Natalie (new)

Natalie | 974 comments The ruling in the earlier game was that the chaser has to stop reading if they are knocked out and the goal is void if they do not. I’d prefer to have the mods make the final ruling in this case.

message 45: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (countessmom) | 4087 comments Ok. So unfortunately Natalie is correct and the score is void.

If it’s provabke that the chaser continued reading while being knocked out, as was the case in the other game, or now with the completed chain post, then the score is unfortunately void.

I’d point out that based on Natalie’s description post above, it looks like Emily read her back in in under 4 hours as well, so you’ll need to be extra careful and watch your times.

Sorry.

Emily was reading her in based on a shorter book from an earlier chain and the time was fine on that read. Thanks for stopping by and ruling regardless.

Emily didn't need a 4 hour minimum. The attack and defense were based on a 174 page book from the first chain.

This is my last post, and I'll accept either the mods maintaining the current ruling or changing it.

For the record, I asked Kate if she saw the beater attack completion while reading, and she said no that she was too busy reading. Given that she finished a 500+ page book in a about three hours, I believe her. I don't think it is fair to penalize players for focusing on reading and missing game announcements. This makes the game stressful and frustrating when it is supposed to be fun.

Second, the ruling for a chaser stopping a book was never added to the original Let's Play Quidditch thread. It is not something that was required or enforced in both matches. If we're going to enforce a rule, can we please get it placed in the main rules thread so that incoming teams understand what to expect?

Edited to add: Having rulings on the captain's board that are not updated to the main rules seems unfair to regular players because they can't see those rules and ask questions about them.

message 50: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4149 comments FYI we made the same argument as you in our first match against Gryffindor and were told that chasers need to be aware of when they are under attack and to stop reading if they are knocked off their broom. So, our goal was void.

This means that chasers need to update the game thread on occasion to see if they are under attack. They can keep reading until they are knocked off then they must stop reading. Just like in a Quidditch match if a bludger's coming at you, pay attention to the bludger in case it knocks you off your broom.
