Thanks Sarah :)

the mods will be ok with you not answering all the DQ questions if you are engaged in the chat.

Actually on 16th is fine for a finish date - and I suspect you can respond to DQs / chat after that date too if you've already started chatting

Charms thoughts

1. Levitation charm:
I'm kinda reserving Children of Blood and Bone (Legacy of Orïsha, #1) by Tomi Adeyemi for "after" in the hope tht someone will read a book with a woman with white hanging down hair.

It struck me that I've got more chance of that happening if you know that that's what I have half in mind.

That doesn't stop other suggestions, of course!

2. Cheering charm
I'm minded to read Sad Cypress (Hercule Poirot, #22) by Agatha Christie at some point for the before title. It'll need to be paired with a "Happy" or "Laughing" (or similar) title - anyone got any ideas?

3. Water-making charm
My thoughts are either pairing a water-based title with The Dry or maybe a water cover with Red Dirt Heart 3 (Red Dirt, #3) by N.R. Walker

Any suggestions or alternates, pleas shout!

4. Mending charm
I have NO idea for this one at the moment...

waiting for my nekkid man book from you! ;)

Yup, good day, starting with an early morning call from my mother, singing Happy Birthday, and receiving a cheese joke card from work - I love me some cheese-based jokes :)
Quiet evening this evening, 'cos I'm out tomorrow with Him Indoors, so I'll be able to finish a couple of books and do some further thinking on class options :)

For a book geek, that's some heady stuff there!

Melindam wrote: "I could read The Happy Prince & other stories to your Sad Cypress, Cat for the cheering charm."

True story: my family continue to tease me about my reaction to The Happy Prince collection: I read it - at my mother's suggestion - when I was maybe 10?
They can make me sad just by mentioning the Nightingale & the Rose tale. So I am unable to read that book, even now.

My family are arses! and poets. I have an abiding belief that poets are utter bastards, because of that story.

Funnily, The Happy Prince and other stories are really among the saddest ones in literature. I think I was 12 when I first read them and had to wipe away tears sometimes.

so true! I can't begin to imagine the number of kids utterly scarred by reading those stories too early, or under the misapprehension that they are cheery tales! there's two of us here, after all!

Quick check on reading plans.....

I've got various people down as reading for tasks - can you let me know if you are still planning on reading those books or not :)

Melinda - an ARC (Shelved Under Murder); The Happy Prince and Other Tales

Amy - the Buffy 3-in-1; a book with STITCH in the title

Cat - I might've bitten off more than I can chew! at least for the immediate future.... I've got in mind to read a couple of HUGE books for Astronomy (The Sunne in Splendour & Pandora's Star), plus Iron Gold, Spinning Silver & Sad Cypress

Is anyone else quietly reading for a task that I've not captured here?

So... if anyone wants to find a book with Iron or Silver in the title, I won't complain!
Also, we need one more book with a Dark creature in the book (vamps / witches / weres / what-have-you) - any volunteers?

I am a leeetle wary of using snow for the water charm, but was very happy to see an I character - we need Is. lots & lots of them, so that was super good! :)

Melindam | 8289 comments Cat wrote: "Quick check on reading plans.....

ARC: Yes
Happy prince: YES

Dark creature: will finish a book Peril in the Old Country soon with goblins in them. Is that dark enough? :) If not, this book also has a U-character.

Plus, I also have Sad Cypress and as it's one of my favourite AC books, I will be happy to re-read it. I also have Evil Under the Sun for astronomy - it's a quick read.

message 532: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
goblins are suitably dark, yup! Hurrah!

and if you don't mind rereading Sad Cypress, I'd be hugely grateful! :)

We've got 37 class tasks still to complete, and I'm keen to see how many we can do before the fun of Tri-Wizards comes up.

In case you guys didn't see, Sonia's put a teaser out in the Cauldron:

SPOILER ALERT FOR GOBLET OF FIRE. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.

If you recall, tri-Wizards had 3 quests: dragons, mermaids and maze. Or, if you want to put it like this, courage, lost, and everything goes LOL

What will going to happen is this: MAZE and final quest, will be done BY HOUSE, and will be from July 1st to July 31st. It's going to be this massive thing, with all houses starting in one corner, and moving to the center, where the Tri-Wizard Cup is. Remember what happens next? Yes, the cup has a surprise.

If you think so far was fun and crazy, you're in for a treat!

The road to the maze will be BY TEAM. RL has been crazy lately, but I'm going to try really hard to have it all out on the weekend. It will be lighter, at your own pace. It won't be a crazy amount of books like classes or spells.... we don't want teams to burn or give up.

I like the idea of having teams qualifying to play maze BUT I don't want to add unnecessary stress/strain, so that's still on the thinking phase.

=======
so, there will be some more focused tasks coming up (elsewhere she's mentioned genre tasks) soon...

We can!

Might shift the gun to weres or fae & use fire on zombies

ETA: Just seen Melinda's update that the goblin book has a U character.... now I'm torn!

message 536: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1634 comments I will look for something with "torn" in the title, though, those are mostly bodice rippers, in my experience. Not my favorite, but I'll read one if we need it. Maybe a little later, though, as I've still had my fill of reading books I don't really want to read. :P

I've got Iron and Magic for a book with "iron" in the title. Doesn't come out until June 26, but I'll be reading it as soon as it's released.

I'm currently working on an O (though many more letters will be available as well if we want to go with something else) with water on the cover. Also has changelings (shifters) and psy.

message 537: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1634 comments Also, I have a TON of shifter/vamp/whatever books in addition to the one I'm currently reading.

message 538: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10094 comments Mod
Katie, I did think "torn" offerings were a bit duff, but though you might be interested in Ripped (Real, #5) by Katy Evans ;-P

There's no rush yet, just me being overexcitable, so don't worry, as you have taken many many for the team during quidditch!

O is excellent - I'm trying to spell out Petrificus Totalus right now, and missing several letters, including an O :)

I have put some books into the 2nd half of our magical creature.

It is rated XXX - Competent wizard should cope
It lives in (preferably) 5* hotels and eats doughnuts.
It's blood can be used in potions to help induce divination trances.

As for what it looks like....
so far:
Bat wings, with mammoth trunk (once Emelie finishes the book).

We need three more body parts / descriptors on covers to finish it off, and then a name.

Hope you like it so far - we can change things if you want!

Elena | 1403 comments Cat wrote: "@Elena - what did you think of The Forever War?"

I liked it for the most part :) Some ideas seem a little... dated? and some of the science went over my head I'm afraid, but I liked the premise and the plot and I found the implied social commentary on a nation at war very relevant. In a way the book unintentionally makes a good companion for its transfig partner Drift :) (view spoiler)

message 541: by Elena (new)

Elena | 1403 comments For water summoning I have Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri for cover or Stillhouse Lake for title if it helps with ideas? I've been in line for The Dry on OverDrive but it might be few weeks before my turn.

Also I'm about to start The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet - will it work for celestial? - 467 pages.

message 542: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1634 comments Actually, I found Torn which looks pretty decent. I'll read it to pair with Amy's "stitch". :)

I hated My Name is Shylock...

@Elena, re Astronomy.

Rulings have been:
Planet will work, but World wouldn't

Mods have also clarified that embedded words are ok only if it refers to a celestial object - Sunday /honeymoon wouldn't be OK; Starlight / sunrise would

Any thoughts?

we've done fire!

I used Ice -> Fire and Ice titles

:)

Class Tasks outstanding:
Levitation charm pair (cover+cover OR title+title before & after)
Water-making charm pair (cover+cover OR title+title before & after)
two books with divination tools in them (content of book)
Transfiguration pair (cover items)
three books with body parts for the magic creature (cover items)
Astronomy books (title)
Arithmancy books (in ranges: 801-900p; 351-500p; 501-650p)

Spells
vowels - lots of - O, I, A
plus U, R, T, L, N

Charms thoughts
for Levitation, we have Children of Blood and Bone (Legacy of Orïsha, #1) by Tomi Adeyemi , which we could use as an after (hair levitating) with a before long haired girl with it down

for Water-making possibly The Dry with Stillhouse Lake (titles of dry - water)?
or covers with dry scene -> water scene?
or empty glass -> glass with water?

Melindam | 8289 comments Ah, sorry, I missed that! Evil under the Sun could go for astronomy then?

For Arithmancy book range 501-650p I have a book The Love Knot with 544 pages

I will also finish Debutantes by Charlotte Bingham which has water on the cover.

It could! or an E or A.

It'll be put to use, one way or another, never fear!

Fair warning re astronomy books: we get points by page for that one, so if we read longer books, I'll kick shorties out!

We do still need 97 letters for the spells, so no fear yet that a book won't be put to use! And every book provides its own points, plus boosts our Arithmancy points too :)

I've got in mind to reread HP from at least Prisoner so that should provide us with diviniation tools plus a 800 - 900p book (I read PS & CoS in Cutthroat, so I need to double check when the 6mths is up)
