SOLVED. Children's picture book about a cake that takes over an entire town/forest/village. [s]

All I remember about this picture book is that they use too many ingredients or possibly too much yeast and the cake they are making takes over the entire forest/town/village. Can't remember if it's people or animals who are the main characters, but in the end the entire town/forest gets to eat this delicious cake. I can picture the images so clearly but for the life of me I cannot find this!

I read it around 1985-1990 and I remember the illustrations as just sort of soft woodland pictures... very traditional illustrations.

No it was more like a cake/bread without frosting that expanded and took over the entire town!

Could it have been bread and not cake?

It reminds me of The Giant Jam Sandwich, but I'm not sure the plot fits.
