The book that I chose from my groups library is called When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead. This book is written in both a narrative form and in a form of letters being written. The book follows Miranda through her adventures through New York City in the neighborhood that she lives in. Miranda’s mom gets chosen to go onto a game show called The $20,000 Pyramid and throughout the book, Miranda and her dad are helping her practice for the show because they want the money. There are two many characters in the story that play into the mystery of the book, the crazy laughing man and the group of boys on the corner by their apartments. Sal, Miranda’s best friend, and Miranda were walking home from school when they saw the group of boys approach them and with nothing being said, the boys went up to Sal and punched him. From then on, Miranda started to receive notes left for her where she would place her spare house key. I was a bit confused on who exactly was writing the notes, it had to be someone that knew her because it would recall the things that she would do and threw me off a bit in the book. The laughing man in the book points at Miranda and her friends and he yells at them, but what he yells at them connects back to the notes she is receiving. The whole book is a puzzle piece that ends with Miranda’s mom winning the game show and she stops receiving notes after the third one.
