And so the merry party began. It was one of those jolly, happy, bread-crumbling parties where you cough twice before you speak, and then decide not to say it after all.”
It's brain," I said; "pure brain! What do you do to get like that, Jeeves? I believe you must eat a lot of fish, or something. Do you eat a lot of fish, Jeeves?""No, sir."
"Oh, well, then, it's just a gift, I take it; and if you aren't born that way there's no use worrying.”

As I started and breezed my way through the initial portions of the book, I felt like I was reading another jolly good story. The writing and the plot were ordinary yet refreshing. The writing of the book is very simple yet profound. The way Hamid takes an insignificant observation about life and blends it with the next scene of his narrative thereby making the observation completely apt is beautiful. Hamid didn't go all meta in this book but it's a book which reveals something new each time we read it. The narrative is clever and well written. Sadly the positive aspects end here.
Hamid tells us the story of a typical hungry foreigner - New Yorker with an admirable honesty. Thankfully the author concentrated on just Changez and Erica, giving them so much space and depth. Especially Erica is a delight to read about. Her insecurities, needs, fears and feelings about her past are skilfully portrayed.
While Changez had a lot of honesty in the early portions of the book, the post 9/11 episode is a zingoistic mess.
****Spoilers Ahead ****
Let's talk about Love first. When you love a girl and want to grow old with her, you should really deserve her. When Erica was struggling with issues over her late boyfriend, what Changez should've really tried is to distinguish himself from her ex boyfriend. He should've tried to build on the friendship she feels for him. Erica repeatedly tells Changez in this book that she loves his Lahori self. What he should've tried is to be himself and present himself with an absolute honesty. Instead what he actually does is to ask her to think of him as her late boyfriend. That spelt the doom for Erica. And I was terribly disappointed with that.
Mr. Hamid, contrary to your belief, USA doesn't revolve around the education business. They don't lure you or any student from any part of the globe with a desire to use him against his country. And your comparison of yourself to Janissaries is just disgusting. I think any student of any country who wants to go abroad and study carefully chooses the country, University and course in that order. Even Changez must have done the same. It's not that US is giving financial aid to brilliant students just to use them as corporate and financial soldiers against their own country.
And I was astonished and shocked to see the Kargil episode go unnoticed (or maybe deliberately left out in your narrative). I think Changez must be 20 by then and should've already had an idea about what's going on in his country. The infiltrations were clearly supported by the Pakistani Army and the then President and Chief of Staff Pervez Musharraf came down to LOC and motivated the army to free Kashmir from the clutches of India. Where were you then, Changez? Wasn't it bad on your nation's part? Didn't you feel anything about it then? Or were you busy mugging up in Princeton?
Regarding your comment about the Financial aids and sanctions by US, I would like to ask a few questions. Is there any other country on the globe, in which the democracy is such a puppet in the hands of the army? Is there any nation in which more coups had taken place than your holy country? Isn't it an obvious reason, why Pakistan is treated that badly. Don't you think your nation deserved that reaction ?
Regarding your comment about the assault on Indian Parliament by 'armed men' - What's your stand on it sir? What do you think Pakistan would've done differently, if the same 'armed men' attacked Pakistani Army Headquarters (they don't give a damn about parliament I guess)? And more importantly, what would have been playing on your mind? How do you think you would've reacted? Just like the same savage, sadistic way you reacted when you saw WTC towers crash?
Your army (I don't give a damn about that non-existent government of yours) hosts a solid number of high profile criminals, shouts that It does nothing of the sort, gives a dossier of wanted criminals with names like LK Advani and Murali Manohar Joshi and still you think India is trying to wage a war at the behest of America? Tell me, Changez what do eat daily?
I know it's not easy to be perfectly impartial and I agree one needs to be patriotic towards his nation but the Stand you took is just shocking and contemptible.
Let me ask a question : You go to an esteemed foreign University with financial aid from that country, study there and get a job from one of the leading firms in the business. Then the nation joins war on your mother nation with a just cause. And what would you do? Stamp the nation as Rogue and go back to your nation and start campaigning against it? I agree that US has always behaved like BIG BROTHER to the world, but don't you think your nation deserved that?
One of the most shocking arguments in this book is about collateral damage. You think the war US /India going to wage against the armed men with no uniform (What's wrong with the word Terrorist, Hamid?) will result in the deaths of thousands of innocent people like you. You think those deaths would be classified as Collateral Damage. Then what about the daily, some times twice and day, blasts that take place in Pakistan? You don't know how many people die in such attacks? Isn't that a big damage?
I don't know how to conclude this : I'm sorely disappointed the way the author assumed things and pointed Fingers on US. I didn't like his decision of leaving his Job in US and campaigning against USA in his homeland. What he should've tried is to Fight for a stable and able democracy in his country.
Tell me Changez, you really sure you're just a 'Reluctant 'Fundamentalist?

@hp
agree with you
i mean hamid wrote this story because he wanted to write something then why not this, it wasn't researched well and even badly narrated i hated every part of chagez and erica
and most ridiculous thing was hamids's thoughts on US and India , he was being some sort of political leader who says, "US is using India" ,"never use words like terrorist" and says India starts a war, He was not being an intellectual writer.
and i don't think US doesn't have smart and intelligent students so it lure students from other countries
i don't even want to rate this book don't deserve a single star
