All I can remember of this book is that the hero is a hitman/contract killer who returns to the heroine and stays at her chalets that she is refurbishing over so many years

Agnes and the Hitman I don't really think that this is it, but thought I'd suggest it anyway since it has a hitman and he stays with a woman who is refurbing a southern mansion.

What's the tone - romantic, romantic suspense, angsty, steamy/clean, funny, etc.?

Location - country, region? Are her chalets (or cabins?) a winter or summer vacation spot (e.g., visitors go skiing or swimming/boating)?
