The second book starts a bit slower than the first. I've also have a hard time with the back and forth in present and past. I've started chapter 6:
(view spoiler)[I wonder who the creature was Mia met at the cemetary and that saved her life. It must be a darkin too. I also agree with the creature. Her vengeance is blinding her and maybe there's a bigger picture than just taking revenge. Who is this 'viper' where Eclipse is staying with and Mr. Kindly is now traveling to? This storyline goves more questions for now than it gives answers. Why is Mia so certain that she will be stationed at Godsgrave permanently? It must be painful for her to return to the Crow's nest where she grew up. And who is the person who gives her her assignment? (hide spoiler)]

I'm up to chapter 8: (see comments above the new date)
(view spoiler)[I'm struggling a bit with the past and the present switch in the book. I need to keep my head with it. Also, with a second shadow the conversations between Mr. Kindly and Eclips are interesting, but a bit confusing at times. But still, this book looks promising. In chapter 8 it seems that Mia has a heart, when meeting Belle. She isn't so made of stone as she pretends, but will that be her soft spot that can put her in danger? Furian sounds interesting. Will he be the darkin as Mia expected, because he can be her enemy then and one to watch out for. I can assume that it must be painful for Mia to return to her home where she grew up. How will that affect her further? (hide spoiler)]

Almost finished chapter 10 and it's finally picking up pace!
(view spoiler)[I'm a fan of the interaction between Mia, Sidonius and Mattheo. I mean, how many times wil Sidonius receive a beating before he gets that his attitude isn't working? And what's that with Mattheo, who has never heard of all the gladiatii fights and competitions? Where did he even come from? I think those 3 will need to rely on each other more than they think. Okay, Jessamine being Mia's hand was interesting and I wanted to see more adventures with those to, but sadly it came to an end by...Ashlinn! Yes, she's back! With a fight on the roof top of the basilic she seems to know more about the death of Mia's father and about the Red Church not being what it is, but having Scaeva as a patron? Mia did good on not murdering Ashlinn, so far, it seems she has necessary answers. Furian seems just to be a muscled gladiatii with no brains... (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Well, the plan that Mia had, is just mad! I really doubt if it will work killing Scaeva and Duomo at the magni, without the holy trinity. And still, Mia is blinded by hate and revenge, while there is so much more happening around her. When Bryn and Byern told her about what happened to them and to all the poor people in the village, the lives they live, she has a bit of compassion, but it evaporated when thinking about her own goal. I would've liked to read more about Mattheo, but he got killed. It was an interesting twist reading Sidonius' back story. Will he be an allie of Mia or would she be to scared to tell him who she really is, besides Darkin? So, Leona and Furian, well, that was obvious. I wonder if she'll ever know that Mia killed Remus. I like the vibe between Mia and Ash, but will Ash in the end turn again against Mia? Like always, Mr. Kindly and Eclipse are just the best. (hide spoiler)]

Up to chapter 28: This book isn't good for my nerves! Almost near the end of the second book.
(view spoiler)[A lot has happened to the Collegium. I had a feeling that Leona was bedding Furian and that he was preventing Mia for using her shadow work. I'm not such a fan of him. Finally, Ashlinn and Mia had their big moment together, but what will the consequences be? The fight with Ishkah was just mindblowing! The reading pace picked up very high. I wonder who poisoned the gladiatii. It would be obvious that it was Arkades, but I know it can't be him. It's too easy. Dona Leona's fahter is just so awful. No wonder that he will try to compete against him. I felt heartbroken for Maggot. She was such a sweet girl. I hope the sell won't go through. Besides everything, Mia can't deny that she has friends. They aren't just means to an ending. Mr. Kindly and Eclipse don't have so much to say as in the first book. I miss the conversations. Now, what will Sidonius tell Mia about her mother? I'm so curious! (hide spoiler)]

I've finished the book and it blew me away! The Ultima Dicta says exactly how I feel.
(view spoiler)[I mean, Mia and Jonnen are Scaeva's children?! Come on, how will she cope with that? Also, Mia is not coldhearted at all. I thought she truly killed the gladiatii, but they were her friends and she played a tric to free them. That was unexpected. What she did for Leona, it seems that she wants to righten all the wrong that has been done. Does she has Furian's daemon now that he's killed? She got Eclipse after Lord Cassius was murdered. And Tric is alive! I knew it! (hide spoiler)]

On to book 3, but I don't want to finish the series :(
