I have always felt there was far more Roman activity in Devon than has been credited. It is interesting to see they are excavating Roman baths at Exeter Cathedral. It is also interesting to see how often Christian sites have been built on old pagan places. In North Devon there is a very straight road near Ilfracombe, which has always been called the Roman Road. It is difficult to think that the Romans were not interested in the fertile valley and good anchorage at Ilfracombe.
