Emma, what's the time and location - country, region, big city/small town? Do you recall specific political/social events in the story?
Rainbowheart's suggestion of Noughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman looks promising.
Here's the Google Books preview - https://books.google.com/books?id=Sx8... There are different cover images.

He's out there. I don't have to see him to know he's out there. He's down there in the rose garden, just below my window. I can sense it. I can sense him. My whole body is tingling and my mouth is dry and my stomach keeps flipping over like a pancake. What should I do?

I read a series of books a couple of years ago and I can’t for the life of me remember what they were.
I vaguely remember bits of the story, however not enough that my usual go to on Facebook has been able to help me with!
The first couple of books were from a female point of view. Think she was a child and it was over time. I’m sure the books were named after the people.
Wasn’t allowed to be friends with black people, they were seen as scum but she met someone on a beach that was black and became friends very young.
The books were set over time, she in the end had a mixed race child.
I remember she was very white privileged and remember a rose garden?
Other than that I’m completely clueless. Please help!! Thanks, Emma x
