My first thought is that if they could have children they might be more inclined to fight to survive. That would turn the book into more of a science fiction novel, which I don't think is what Ishiguro is aiming for. Also, the children would add another level of complication to the immortality of creating people so their organs can be harvested. Cloning isn't what the book seems to be about. It is more about how we deal with mortality.
