The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

I'm getting my copy of this tomorrow so I can finally watch the movie and compare the two. I have had this movie since last christmas.... I hope its good

I have read and watched this story. I liked Gatsby, because he was creative in getting what he wanted. I think that the setting is significant because it brings to life the theme of the story, "Is it ok to look into the past?" or it could be "Can your past be your future?" I definitely would recommend this book because the story is timeless.

I like Nick Carraway, he's just a guy looking inside a window but despite everything happening he rarely objects.

The message of the book is whether you can change the past or not. The answer is (view spoiler)[no, you can only accept it and keep going on. The only thing you can change it the look on the past. (hide spoiler)]

I would recommend the book for those who haven't watched the movie first. The movie kinda ruined the book for me because I already knew and/or expected was what going happen

I just finished this and boy for such a small book it seemed to have a lot of stuff thrown in there that was not needed. I don't think I had a favorite character really ... I did like how Gatsby held on to his dreams even when they seem impossible to achieve. The book was horrible for me to start since I did not know who's point of view it was from. I thought it was going to be from Gatsby's since it was a story about him but no it was about everyone else and it just included him. As the story progressed though it did get better but some of the paragraphs just weren't needed they didn't pertain to the story what so ever. I am going to be watching the movie soon to compare I hope the movie is a bit better.

^ I disagree that there were too many paragraphs not pertaining to the story. Maybe it's just because of the book I am currently reading, but I really enjoyed the complete story of The Great Gatsby. The plot is timeless, still morally relevant today, and brings some important topics to light. I think my favourite character was Jay, although I'm not completely sure why. I guess it's the way he holds onto his dreams. Nick seemed too fickle, always changing his opinions on people. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy a well-written classic. It was a great book in my opinion!

This is one of my favorite books.
I get that it's not for everyone...
I just love the way Fitzgerald wrote the book, his ideas of a way to criticize society in a form of a story , were just amazing to me.
My favorite character was obviously Gatsby, he just wants to live the past again and really who doesn't want that ? We all in a way sometimes or most of the times think about how what we've lived in the past its better than what we've been living now. Now for Daisy and Jay... Well they were careless for their actions and consequences throw out the whole entire book, like none of them cared what happened to their respective "lovers". Well and nick he was just there like all of us seeing life pass by, trying to do something for the unjust stuff that was happening, but in the end seeing that nobody cared.

So I'm not a booktuber but I'm heavily immersed in the community and I think that's good enough to participate in the discussion?

I studied the great Gatsby and it is my all time favourite book. F.Scott has a way of writing about people in a timeless and poetic way that made me sad and nerdily excited. I loved that he accepted his characters for exactly who they were and that he created them to despite the timeless and ever present characters we have around us.

His writing is literary porn. It makes my skin tingle with it's ability to conjure pictures in my mind that last long after the page is turned. I could sit and read the same sentence again and again and see a dozen possibilities as to his intentions and still never know what he truly meant.

I love that you we love to hate these characters. Tom is everything that's wrong in the world but he wasn't always so. I sympathise with his constant urge to make Daisy love him the way she only over loved Gatsby, but I want him to be the one that suffers before during and after I read the book. However that never happens because F.Scott makes it very clear to us that life isn't that fair. And never will be. So we finish the book with anger.


I only developed my obsession with all things F.Scott.Fitzgerald when I learnt about his life. He had almost exactly the life that Gatsby did, without the heartbreak or of hosting wild parties, but then again: how are we to know? He is a mystery in time and I wouldn't have to think twice about saying he is the long gone author I want to know all about, hate it or love it.

This is one of my all time favourite books,it's just so incredible.And it has one of the best book to movie adaptations there are.It's wonderful and deep and full of meaning and I really thing everyone should just read this.

So I really, really tried with this book, because everyone always raves about it, but I just didn't get it. I thought the social comment was good, but other than that I really feel like I missed something.

It's probably just me, but is there anyone here from outside the US who loved it? Because I thought perhaps it might just be a culture difference or something. I don't know, I was just really disappointed :(

Ugh, I HATED The Great Gatsby. I struggled through it even though I couldn't get into it. I didn't care at all about the characters, and if you write a character-driven book with dislikeable characters, it's not going to be an enjoyable read for some! I was very disappointed as everybody seemed to love it, but I'd gladly burn that book for warmth!

I love The Great Gatsby, but I actually really prefer The Beautiful and the Damned. I respect that people feel that TGG is a more polished and elegant novel, but I actually like how The Beautiful and the Damned was so raw and discordant at times. Either way, I'm a big fan of F. Scott Fitzgerald. :)

While I do understand the message that the author was trying to say in this book. I didn't think it was all that good either. It was 'meh'.
