Marie (mariealex) | 1114 comments Hello !
Thank you mods for this season, i agree with the comments that the blackjack was really fun !
Looking forward to start the new season :)

message 1603: by Kaja (new)

Kaja | 61 comments Love the fact that the summer season is relatively simple and that we are encouraged to read all those dust collectors at least I have kept in my shelves over the years. My first completed task was put on my "Want to read"-list (and probably bought) 6 years ago! It's been a while since I last joined in, but with a baby due in 3 weeks and partial lock down I'm hoping for a good season. I will be trying to read most of the printed books in June and then start working my way through the audiobook shelves...

Ha, ha.... I noticed that too. I am reading Brat Farrar, and I was so excited when they had tea - it was a bit of a let down to realized I didn't need to take note!

Elizabeth (Alaska) Congratulations on the baby, Kaja! I hope you get as much reading time as hoped for!

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3118 comments Oh, my... thank you so much!! I have been looking and filling my carts with books I tell myself I don't need lol

But, as my husband reminded me, it's the big 40 for me in a few days so I did think I had reason to spoil myself ;)

btw, why is 40 a big one? I don't particularly know why it's called such...

@Ed: there's a bit of a story because you can actually pronounce it both ways...

I grew up in Indonesia so, they'd pronounced it 'Teen'

But when I came to Australia to study, I found English speakers pronouncing it 'Tee-En' which I didn't / don't mind because Tien is kind of a derivative of my Chinese name which is pronounced 'Tián' (you can listen here, google search) -as you can hear, it's much closer to what my family calls me.

So, either way, you're good ;)

message 1620: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments Hi folks, hope everyone is staying safe and hope we are able to avoid a second wave of Covid19.
My library (City of San Diego) just extended the due date again for books already checked out to July 13....as I expected. Not going to be shocked if it gets extended again. They also will be starting some limited hold pick-ups ...but that won't help me much....since I was already near the maximum number of books that can be checked out (40)....and I can't put books on hold until I return the others. Luckily, I have enough books at home already...to work on this season's challenges.... but hope this situation doesn't go on much longer than July.

Rosemary | 4356 comments I have to go back to work next week so I am making the most of my last few days of uninterrupted reading!

I have had my kitchen remodelled in the last 4 weeks - all arranged in Feb/early March and then postponed. It has been interesting, and slow, as the guys were only allowed to work one at a time for their safety, and I needed to be off the premises while they were working :) luckily I have very kind neighbours whose apartment is a second home so they have not been here at all since March, and I have their keys and they allowed me to go there during the day and use their kitchen ... otherwise I don't think it would have been possible! Such strange (but interesting) times...

Elizabeth (Alaska) Today's scorekeeping entertainment:

Tien posted My Korean Deli: Risking It All for a Convenience Store by Ben Ryder Howe. Trying to find a birth year for him, VIAF showed a title for a Ben Ryder Howe, born 1971, as

Begrabt mein Herz im Tiefkühlfach mein Jahr als Ladenhüter

Is that the same book? Scurrying over to Google translate gives me:

Bury my heart in the freezer compartment my year as a store keeper

Yep! Same guy! :-)))

Valerie Brown | 3296 comments The Volcano, Montserrat and Me: Twenty years with an active volcano by Lally Brown

How was it Valerie?.... I have this one on my list too.

Answering Ed's question here:

I feel slightly harsh saying it was 'meh'. I would say it was moderately interesting. It wasn't a slog like some of the books I've read for our group challenge (A Footnote to History: Eight Years of Trouble in Samoa ......yes, I mean this book!).

You learn what it is like living on a very small island with a very large, active, volcano. The author kept a diary while she was there and the book is presented as such - which is good and bad. She clearly loved the island and the people she met. She's quite a plucky woman too, which shines through. I will be giving it 3*, which is at odds with everyone else who has rated it much higher.

Meanwhile, my other library (one near the office) has just extended all loans to 30th September...

message 1631: by Bea (new)

Bea My local library opened this week with limited services. They are following all the guidelines (social distancing at checkout, polyurethane screens in front of librarians at desk, monitoring the numbers of people entering, and patrons are allowed only 1 hour each to remain or use the computers). Still, it is open!

Thanks for reminding me of it, Valerie.

Anika | 2815 comments I know this is totally off-topic, but I have to vent and I think that my friends here would understand...

I’m currently reading Spies of Mississippi: The True Story of the Spy Network that Tried to Destroy the Civil Rights Movement, a non-fiction book aimed at young readers (which I chose to complete a different challenge of a book from every U.S. state). It’s an accurate description of black lives during Jim Crow and the Civil Rights Movement, informative, well-researched, and timely in light of protests currently taking place in the U.S.

When I went to the page to change my reading status of the book, I glanced at the reviews and the top review, a one-star review, was filled with lies about the book and its author, thinly-veiled racism. The reviewer shelved it as “white-homeland” and “white nationalist.” I’m absolutely sickened by this—this forum (goodreads) normally feels like a safe place but that reviewer instantly tarnished that :’-(
And of course “comments” to their hateful review are turned off.
I “liked” the reviews below it in hopes that somehow more people would follow suit and the awful review would be buried...
This book has been out for ten years and has fewer than 500 reviews so it’s not like it’s being seen by a ton of people, but it’s the principle of the matter...I don’t like lies and hate being the top review.

Sorry, that was so rambling, I’m just still so bothered by it and this all happened yesterday :-(

message 1635: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) You can flag such a review. Goodreads allows a latitude of free speech found almost nowhere else on the planet, but even it has it's limits. I don't know that they would remove the review - I'm not in position to know exactly where their line is - but this is an area where the do, actually, have a line.

I "liked" the better reviews in the hopes of bringing them to the top. It's admirable that you are concerned, Anika.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I just saw in another group the passing of Carlos Ruiz Zafón at the young age of 55. I will start a favorite authors thread after a bit.

Zafon’s editors paid homage to the author by quoting from one of its passages: “Every book, every volume you see, has a soul. The soul of the one who wrote it, and the soul of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it,”

Kaja | 61 comments I'm so excited about the new central library in Oslo (which happens to be my local library as well) opening this week! Lockdown has been lifted for the most part in Norway, and the library now accepts visitors up to half of capacity. We are even allowed to borrow books again and they are arranging read alouds for kids and film screenings (in addition to activities related to music, sewing/fixing your clothes, etc) :)

I was hoping the library would be done by the time my first child Selma arrived in 2017, so I could take my mid-day stroll there and have a coffee. Luckily, I get a new chance now that little sister is arriving (any day now!).

How are the libraries where you live, and what activities do they offer besides the possibility to borrow books?

That library looks nice! You'll have to give a user's perspective once you've been there.

We are still in "Stage 2" of opening in Ontario. So, for libraries that means the books are still via curbside pick up. You have to order on-line you can't go into the stacks. As well, you can book a time to use one of the public computers when the library is open for curbside pick up (which is limited hours). Stage 2 allows for groups of up to 10, so other activities still have to be virtual.

I know the Library CEO is hoping that we will be moving into Stage 3 in a couple of weeks. I'm not sure how that will be configured, but there is opportunity for those of us on lay-off to work a few hours. It doesn't sound like things will be back to usual for a while.

message 1641: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) We have had curbside pickup for several weeks, and late last month they started allowing a limited number of patrons inside. Still no computer use and no story time or other meetings.

And what an interesting building!

message 1642: by Connie (new)

Connie G (connie_g) | 1913 comments Your city must be very excited to see a library with such interesting architecture. I hope everything goes well with the arrival of the little sister!

Our library has curbside pickup which is working well. A couple days ago certain parts of the library opened to patrons by appointment only. They are providing lectures online via Zoom for people that have the technology. Lots of e-books are available.

message 1643: by Kathleen (itpdx) (last edited Jun 24, 2020 10:24AM) (new)

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1735 comments Congratulations on the imminent arrival!
Please do report back on how well the library works inside!
My library just started curbside pick up by appointment. They are starting with the backlog of holds, so I was able to pick up one book. You can start placing new holds for pick up later. I have been checking out ebooks and audio books.
They are continuing their online children’s story time.
The governor decided to put the whole metro area which includes three counties on the same opening schedule and so we couldn’t go to the next phase. There have been increasing numbers of positive tests but I am not real clear on hospitalizations. It may be awhile before we get into the building.
