I'm still having trouble with this issue. Space isn't so much the problem, it's those @#$@#$ Kindle deals that are getting me in trouble. $1.99, $0.99 - not much money out the door, but the number of unread books piles up.

We need a book buyers anonymous group!

OMG.... that's me too - and I have a kindle AND a kobo...... neither of which I count. However, they don't take the physical space and we do live in a small house.

Oh my Kindle is filled too! And downloaded audiobooks. I often have to send some to the cloud because they also take space! My iPad tells me, you’re running out of space here!

message 1305: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) No audiobooks for me, so at least I don't have that problem.

Elizabeth (Alaska) When you perform a search on the group bookshelves, you'll get results to "see group reviews". Clicking that link you'll get to see if anyone rated it 5 stars. At the top of that page, beneath the title/author information you'll see start/finish dates if the book is actually on the group bookshelves.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I see this morning that A Scots Quair, A Trilogy including Sunset Song, Cloud Howe, Grey Granite is available for the Kindle today (US only?) for $1.99. I don't think I've ever posted Kindle deals here before, but I note that some of you have this marked as 1001 and thought perhaps it would interest you.

Not making any great announcement or anything, but it's the 1001 that I thought would interest you most.

Thanks for the tip! My library only has Sunset Song, so I bought the trilogy.

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments Success! I finally figured out how to get electronic and audio books sent to my Kindle from the San DiegoPublic Library. A few years ago I even went to a special seminar to learn how to do it...and the librarian couldn't figure out why my Kindle refused to cooperate. This is even better than the Library's reserve and hold system

Elizabeth (Alaska) Things could change of course. But if you're looking at titles for the "more than 20 letters" option, be sure you can count to 21 and beyond. A flat 20 letters won't work for that one.

message 1317: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) Oh no!! I see new tasks are posted! I’m afraid Im not going to get finished this go round. My daughter had her gall bladder removed and there were serious complications that put her in the hospital almost a week. Her significant other works the 4p to 4 a shift so between getting my grandson back and forth to school and spending a few hours at hospital with her, I haven’t gotten much reading done and I’m in the middle of two interesting books!

Rebekah (bekalynn) Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "Hope things are better soon for your daughter, Rebekah."

Thank you, Elizabeth. She went home Saturday and each of the twins took turns staying with her at her house over the weekend and helping with Tristan. She’s doing much better now. But it was bad for awhile. She had a high bilirubin so they went in to fix the leak, then while they did that, they nicked her pancreas so had to fix it too, it was supposed to be a simple outpatient surgery! But glad we could help and got to spend time with Tristan and even had a snow day! So the kids had fun with him in the snow.
I tried to read at the hospital, but she needed a lot of help. I’m in the middle of Pachinko and I hope to finish it at least on audiobook.

message 1325: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Feb 28, 2020 11:03AM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) So. I'm starting on Blackjack. I was lucky enough to be the first person of my library to have access to The Missing American, the first in a new series by Kwei Quartey. I think some of you have read others by him. On the cover is praise from Michael Stanley: Rich with the colors of Ghana, this is great Sunshine Noir.

What is "Sunshine Noir" I wondered. I spent a happy half hour exploring. Basically, it is the opposite of Nordic Noir - dark mysteries/crime set in Scandinavian countries. Sunshine Noir are mysteries/crime set in hot sunny climes.

Does this sound interesting to you? If so, who would be on your list?

message 1326: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 3298 comments Sunshine noir!!! That DOES sound interesting! Although, to be honest, I need another (potential) series like a hole in the head! I did add that book to my TBR.

Elizabeth (Alaska) And to clarify, I was wondering if "Sunshine Noir" sounded interesting to you.

message 1329: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5296 comments I haven't looked it up yet, but Sunshine Noir does sound good to me because I love Scandanavian Noir and was introduced to it through this group. I've read lots of it, so I'm ready for something new to check out and get interested in. I read Alexander McCall Smith's cozy series set in Botswana and love it, but I like the darker stuff, too.

message 1330: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Yeah, it was Sam's Scandinavian Noir task early on that increased my awareness of such hard crime novels. I've started reading more Noir and I think there are lots of kinds. I'm not sure that what I think of as Noir is the same as either Scandinavian Noir or maybe Sunshine Noir, but I'm not a cozy mystery person either.

There is a book of stories called Sunshine Noir. I haven't yet investigated those authors.

Kwei Quartey had an interesting article about "The Role of the Spiritual in African Crime Fiction" which included curses, gods, witchcraft, and human sacrifice. It was on crimereads.com

Thanks for sharing those links, Connie. I'll read them in depth later, but they look interesting with a quick peruse.

message 1333: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Thanks, Connie. The Beginners Guide article is excellent.

I will admit the Quartey is harder than I'm used to and definitely couldn't take a steady diet. But it has its place and I'm glad to be introduced to the genre.

I don't read much crime fiction, but Quartey is an author that I am considering reading in the summer. I'll be curious to see if you enjoyed his writing.

Is there one task that seems more over-loaded than the others? My 20-pointers are significantly overloaded. My task needed to accommodate group reads from other groups, but Kate's task has the most possibles on my spreadsheet, and the Annie Dillard task has quite a few too.

Well.... I haven't had too much time to consider the recently listed tasks (gasp..... social obligations!); however for the polls I chose 10 books for 10.2 alone. I suspect this season will be one of those where there are far too many books to chose from.

Thank you Bryony and Elizabeth!

My big regret about Lexile is that I haven't kept a list of books I wanted to read that don't quite qualify. Being greedy for points, I just wrote them off, ugh.
