I think a lot of the negative reviews of this book are judgements about how a person should behave in war, made by people who have never experienced it. They want fictional heroes who save everybody in sight. War is not like that. It's confusing and violent. People die - including civilians. For a child to survive alone, he is going to have to look out for himself first ... and not care what people on Goodreads think :)

Years ago, before Christian Bale became famous, played Batman, or even sang in Newsies, my husband and I fell in love with a 13 year old’s singing voice in a poignant and moving film.
