I have no idea if such a book exists, but I think I heard Terence McKenna talk about a similar plot in one of his talks.

There's a short story about a writer... I have a feeling it's an Asimov story, in one of his big Robot collections....

Maybe Fandom for Robots? It's a recent short story nominated for a Hugo, so it's reasonable someone would be talking about it.
