Nathan Simpson Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is a non-fiction book about Louis Zamperini, a Olympic runner who became a bomber pilot during WWII. Louis’s life was changed forever when he crashed into the Pacific Ocean where he had to survive on a raft for over a month before he was captured by the Japanese Military. He remained a prisoner with the Japanese for over two years and was given little food and beaten by guards and officers often, all while his family was told he was dead. Throughout the book Louis’s will to survive and his grit kept him alive. Even through his pain and hardship he continued to fight to stay alive. It is difficult to even imagine some of the things Louis had to go through, and through it all he never lost hope. Even after hundreds of times being tortured, Louis continued to believe that he would be rescued and held on to the hope of seeing his family again, and even though Louis’s family was told he had died they continued to hold onto the hope that they would see their son again. The authors use of imagery makes the reader feel like they are actually there in the story and the reader can feel the intensity. The story is also full of suspense and the style it is written in keeps the reader guessing on every page. Because of this the reader stays engaged and will never want to put the book down. Because of this book's amazing story, excellent descriptions, and suspenseful nature, it receives five stars and is highly recommend for all readers, especially those who enjoy history or incredible true stories.
