Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Hey y'all! Thanks! :)

Now you get the newsletter version. LOL

Though some might wonder due to my lack of participation, I'm sort of working out my priorities. LOL I bet y'all thought I was spending all my time gaming but I'm happy to report I've been a bit more balanced than that.

In addition to reading every night for quite a while now, I've also started journaling and doing crafts.

Me. Crafts. Right? I was surprised too. But making shit is relaxing.

So, journaling. I'm doing this sort of hybrid bullet journal / art journal / freeform thing. All in a traveler's notebook. I had a cover handmade from a lady on Etsy and I love it so much! No photos yet, I haven't gotten it quite set up the way I want yet, and when I do get some taken, Doodles gets to see them first because she's been waiting for me to take the damn photos. LOL But when I do, I'll link them here in case anyone else wants to see them. :)

I've actually been reading more than my challenge reflects, because I also read a lot of stories on the NoSleep subreddit. There are some really good writers on there.

I'm totally not exercising but I'm eating a lot better than I used to. That counts, yeah? :D

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Thanks Orlok! Good to see you too!

I've been trying to catch up on everyone's threads. It's really easy to fall waaaay behind. LOL And yet... I still ended up getting 4 books linked in the WSW thread. :D

message 60: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 459 comments I'm glad you are enjoying your Voyage. I bought another one before they discontinued it. Just wonderful to read on. I have lots of ereaders, but the Voyage is my go-to when I need lighting.

I'm glad to see that you have surpassed your goal of 25 books this year. Yay!!

message 61: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Hey Stephanie! Yeah, the Voyage has definitely turned out to be worth it. It's just all around my favorite reading device to date, especially since I do most of my reading in bed and the lamp is across the room.

I think I should have made my goal higher, but on the other hand... this is better than the year I ended up *lowering* my goal at the last minute so that I'd still get it. LOL

message 62: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments wait, the Voyage is discontinued? :O

message 63: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments Amazon has a new Kindle coming out that is water resistant, and s Audible compliant. So you can switch between reading and listening as needed. It also has a higher capacity, and free cellular connectivity. I told my kids that that’s what I want for Christmas this year, with the blue case! 😊

message 64: by DoodlePanda (last edited Oct 27, 2018 06:38AM) (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments I would love a new kindle, but I cant get myself to get one as long as the old one works... Are you tihnking of the new paperwhite or the Oasis Nyssa?
I see they are both waterproof and have audible too, thats kinda cool :D

message 65: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments Free cellular connectivity?!?! I'm guessing that is not available in Canada or the device would cost $3768.95

message 66: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments I think they have had that on Kindles for a while, you pay a bit more for them but you can download books and browse internet for free, kinda neat if you travel a lot i suppose :)
I'm normally near a wifi or just download books before i go on a trip, so its not something ive been needing so far.

message 67: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments The new one (it doesn’t have a model name, it’s just 10th gen). I like the size of it.

It’s $129.99 (or $26 a month for 5 months with their payment plan option).

I love my current Paperwhite but it started showing signs of age a few months ago.

I can’t remember if it’s 5th or 6th gen.

message 68: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments It makes sense that they sort of merged some of the most-liked features from different models into the new one and got rid of the Voyage. For some of us, the differences between the Paperwhite and the Voyage were worth the upgrade, but I imagine for most people, they weren't different enough to warrant spending more money.

message 69: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments I would like to have the page turning button though I think, but the oasis looks... weirdly shaped i guess? not sure what it would be like to hold, and its not like i can "try it out" before buying.

(speaking like i can actually afford to buy one while i still have a perfectly working old one...)

message 70: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Yeah, the Oasis looks awkward to me. A lot of people seem to like using it but form factor is a big deal to me and I just don't like the way the shape of it looks.

message 71: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1750 comments The new Paperwhite does look interesting. But I do love my Voyage and would especially miss the auto brightness function. However, my Voyage has developed a couple of pinpricks of light, one rather big one. Though I'm mostly able to ignore it. Also, I like the idea of being able to read in the bath without ziplock bagging my Kindle. Not that we have a bath, but for when I'm on vacation or house sitting (which is about five weeks in a year).

Maybe if I can give my old, spare Paperwhite to my sister. She did ask if she could borrow it during our vacation next month. Then I would have a good excuse, because you do need a spare Kindle.

It doesn't matter at the moment, I can't pre-order it in the Netherlands. Which is probably a good thing.

message 72: by Stephanie (last edited Oct 27, 2018 02:53PM) (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 459 comments Let me clarify for you. The 3G is NOT FREE. Those units will be $229 and apparently not available yet.

Advantages of new PPW - waterproof, higher capacity to allow for manga, highly illustrated books and audiobooks, not necessarily MORE ebooks, Audible integration and the beveled edge. The lighting is what makes the Voyage superior really. The new PPW is definitely superior to PPW1, but not so sure that it's a big step up for a PPW3 owner unless you need the waterproofing or live for Whispersync. FWIW, the Kindle Basic 8 also does Whispersync, so if you don't need the light or the waterproofing, save yourself a bunch.

Yes, you do need to keep a spare. That's why I still have my Paperwhite. I also still have a standard Kindle somewhere...

Sorry to hear your Voyage is having problems. :(

message 74: by DoodlePanda (last edited Oct 28, 2018 01:46AM) (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments I think my paperwhite (the first one that came out) is gonna last forever though, so I won't have an excuse to get a new one anyways :( :P

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments DoodlePanda wrote: "I think my paperwhite (the first one that came out) is gonna last forever though, so I won't have an excuse to get a new one anyways :( :P"

LOL Well, it will eventually probably get old and slow, maybe? That's something. :D

message 76: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments I feel its kinda slow already, but not to the point of ruining reading so...

message 77: by Dazrin (new)

Dazrin | 216 comments If you have a chance I would definitely take a look at the Oasis in person, Best Buy generally has them. It is certainly different but I liked it when I tried it. Not enough to upgrade from my Voyage but enough that I would consider it vs the new Paperwhite if/when my Voyage dies.

With the Voyage gone the only way to get page turn buttons is the Oasis which might be enough to push me up to that. Otherwise the non-flat front screen was my main other gripe about the Paperwhite and they have fixed that now.

message 78: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments There is no where that has them here other than online :(
I do really want to have a page turning button though!

message 79: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Dazrin wrote: "Otherwise the non-flat front screen was my main other gripe about the Paperwhite and they have fixed that now. "

This was my main reason for getting the Voyage. I can live without the buttons so I'd probably go down to the new PW instead of up if my Voyage dies.

message 80: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments I updated my Bingo. There's no way I'm going to complete it, but I made progress! :)

I ended up trading in my old Paperwhite towards the new Paperwhite, as a spare. Cuz it's good to have a spare. I really like it, but the Voyage is still my primary device.

message 81: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments Notifications would be nice...

I've never owned an actual Kindle. I've had a variety of Kobos and one Sony (Christa, you remember when everyone was batshit crazy to get their hands on a Sony?!)

I have a Kobo now - can't remember what Gen - but somehow it has been regulated to not being used. I read everything on the iPad now.

message 82: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Yup, I remember the Sony craze. I loved them myself. In fact, it still ranks as my ideal e-reader interface. I've had Kindles, a Sony and a Nook. The convenience and frontlighting of my Kindle with the interface of a Sony would be my dream machine.

Homey was in another thread having issues with GR sending him notifications he didn't want, we're over here wondering why we're not getting any. GR is stealing our notifications and sending them to Homey. Only possible explanation. :D

message 83: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments LOL yea that must be the explanation :P

I am so jealous of Christas new Paperwhite (I feel partly responsible for the purchase...)
But - I have decided on getting a new Kindle myself, so it's all good :D

message 84: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I haven't read a book on my kindle in a long while. Maybe a year.

I was never able to get one of those hot metal body ones...but I have the T1.

Speaking of notifications - I got 30+ emails yesterday...but they were all notifications of my own comments ONLY. head-->desk

message 86: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments I had the T1 too. (Have, rather - it's still around here somewhere.) Some of the metal ones were still available when I got it but those were too darn expensive for me.

message 87: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments DoodlePanda wrote: "I am so jealous of Christas new Paperwhite (I feel partly responsible for the purchase...)"

Yes, our conversation about it probably had a lot to do with it, but I got no regrets. :D

message 88: by Dazrin (new)

Dazrin | 216 comments HomeInMyShoes wrote: "I haven't read a book on my kindle in a long while. Maybe a year."

I am so the opposite, I haven't read a paper book since early 2015. The only time I don't read on my Kindle is when the library only has epub or if it's an audiobook. Then I read on my phone.

message 89: by HomeInMyShoes (last edited Nov 30, 2018 08:56AM) (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments Yeah, I'm reading more on devices, but my phone is getting the bulk because it is just easier. Overdrive doesn't work in Canada on Kindle and hoopla and Cloud don't support it either so all my eBooks from the library are going to my phone.

Perhaps a newer Kindle would solve that, but given that a lot of what I read isn't eBook from the library anyway I get statistics like:

paper books: 73
eBooks: 28
audio books: 1

I am not going to let format availability change what I read yet.

Then any extra cash I have has other priorities over a new eReader.

message 90: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Dazrin wrote: "I am so the opposite, I haven't read a paper book since early 2015."

My Mobileread profile says I joined the forum in Dec 2010, so that's when I got my first ereader. I'd say I've read maybe 10 paper books since then.

message 91: by Dazrin (new)

Dazrin | 216 comments I got my Kindle at the same time. :)

Other than children's books and some technical books for work, neither of which I track, I have read 3 since December 2010.

It really helps that I don't try to read many foreign (non-US/Canada/UK) books like HIMS does and I have 2 decent library ebook collections to draw from. I get most of the books I want these days from the library.

message 92: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Yeah, I know that my reading decisions are made a lot simpler just due to being in the US. 90% of my reading these days comes from either Kindle Unlimited or the two libraries I have cards for (Nashville & Brooklyn). I feel fortunate that though both libraries have added new media services (RBDigital and a few others, including books, audiobooks and video), they haven't pared down their Overdrive offerings by any noticeable degree.

I'm completely spoiled by ebooks. LOL

message 93: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments I read mostly ebooks too, except when I once in a while go to the library. Ironically I've never borrowed an ebook from the library... I guess I never looked into how to do that :)

message 94: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments So I went into my "read" shelf looking for series that I want to pick back up. Out of all the ones I left hanging, I only found four that I want to continue. Now, I'm not counting those that *still* don't have the next book available. (I'm looking at you, Jim Butcher...)

Anyway, I came across a few books in 2016 that didn't even ring a bell. I finally remembered reading them after looking at the blurbs but it was really weird because I usually can recall them just by looking at the cover / title. I guess my memory ain't what it used to be. LOL

Probably a good indication of the likelihood of those series continuing to be read. :)

Very true. :D

I finished Off Season last night. I'm diving into Butterface next. Heck of a genre change there. LOL

Me, too!

Its why I've started using Fictfact more, too (that plus GR being a dick).

Though the sheer volume is intimidating. O_O

message 99: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments I forget books all the time too!

I was looking at some of my early reviews, and since I go out of my way not to add spoilers, I couldn’t remember what the heck I was talking about. LOL!

message 100: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments My Samsung Galaxy Tab A is being receiving the update or Oreo (Android 8) right now!!!

Why is that worthy of a post? Because Samsung is slow as fuck with their Android updates and I fully expected 10 to be out before getting 8. So I'm kinda impressed. LOL
