I remember one challenge, the Decades Challenge, where we had to read so many books, one from each decade. I think it ran for a year.

Yeah I think Quarterly challenges will be a bonus in themselves. Monthly challenges end too quick and usually we don't have time to fit the books. Calendar divisions will help. Seasonal? I'm not good at that division yet.

The Decades challenge sounds really cool!

Not sure Aqsa. I think I like more flexible challenges better so books that I'm already planning on reading fit in....

Question:
What are your views on a full month readathon once in a while? Maybe once after every 2 months?
For those of you who don't know, we hold a 3 day readathon every month. But since most things cannot be covered in it, how about a 30 day (or even 15 days- 7 could be good too if the second question below receives negative feedback) readathon every 2 months?
We could follow specific tropes, read specific genres, follow targeted reads and read loads more with more days in hands?
Let me know.
Another Question:
What do you think of current readathons? Do you think we should increase the number of days from 3 to 5 or even 7?

I like short readathons cause it motivates me more to read while when it's for a long time to me it's "business as usual" so I don't tend to read more than I normally would. Especially since there is one every month I don't feel the need for longer readathons.

Fair enough :) And do you think there should be an occasional big readathon?

Yes, 7 day can be a good motivator and allows enough time. Of course, let's see what other's think. Thank you, Susy for constant feedback :)

I don't mind the idea for big readathons, but like Susy, I think 7 days should be the max, I feel like 3 days of readathon isn't enough time especially with a busy schedule, but then a whole month may be too much since we might forget to update it

Thanks Kare :)
7 does seem reasonable.

I agree with the 7 days. 3 days just seems like such a short amount of time for a specific readathon. If it were a general readathon with no restrictions on what to read, it'd be easier, but since we have certain things we have to read for it to count, I think 7 days would work better...

Thank you for the feedback, Shannara :) We might hold a poll to change it either to 5 or 7 days.

5 or 7 days sounds great :). I've never done a readathon before but it sounds interesting so maybe I'll try one soon!

This is a monthly keywords challenge I found. Please check it out.https://myreadersblock.blogspot.com/2...
I also have another idea/suggestion : You basically pick one of your family member/friend (or more than one) whose birthday falls in that respective month. Then you have to read a book published in the year of that person's birth.

Thank you for sharing, Grace :) It's looks like fun! But since it's a yearly challenge, we'll add it for next year polls. I'm thinking we could try and make it a monthly challenge with several keywords to choose from.

Yes, this could also be modified to include one's own birthday or we could do one with books that were published in the said month (no matter the year) or we could read authors that were born in that month. Thanks again for the input :)

Pick It For Me
In this thread, you'll be assigning books to the person that comments above you. The person can link a specific shelf if they want a book to be selected from there. We could keep it as a monthly or a yearly challenge. We'll keep this for at least 2 months-one for signups and selecting books and another 30 (or 60) days for the participants to get their books and read them.
Please give your feedback.

Scavenger Hunt:
We'll use this as a monthly challenge and maybe list some words that the participants will be looking for in the title or text of the books they read (or both). We'll set it for 30 days at most. Participants will have to mention the book (mandatory) they found a particular word in and maybe post the passage in italic (not mandatory). We can keep points for finding one word.

Pick it for me: for the books chosen is it limited to one book? Or can they pick say 5 books?
I really like this idea
Scavenger hunt: oh! This Is like the name game challenge ! This will be fun! Especially if we can also find the words in the text too!

I love both ideas though I’ll probably won’t participate in the Pick It For Me challenge cause I already have way too many reads planned lol

I like this idea. When are we doing it? Also I think we could do it as monthly challenge.
Thank you for the feedback girls!
@Darce :)
@Susy, yeah you've got them all set!
@Grace We'll probably keep one in May and one in June. In April we'll have Bingo as requested by members :)
@Mandy Yes, probably monthly :)

Pick it for me: I didn't think about more than one book. I think we could keep the format in a way so that everyone posting it will indicate how many books they want selected and they can link their shelves (if they want)? How many days should we keep the reading period for then? 30 days or 60? Won't 60 be too long? (the sign-up period will be separate 15 to 30 days)

Yeah I agree, if they want to choose more books they can create a shelf , but I guess as a min 1 book is good :)
And yeah 30 days is plenty

Alright :) Sounds good but I didn't mean creating a new shelf-only link their goodread shelf/ves from where they'd like the book/s to be selected.

Oh! Got it haha! But if they wanted to create anew shelf entirely then they could as well hahah. Especially if most of their shelves have way too much books to choose from

Yes, they certainly can! Especially if they're like us!

Aw, thanks! So we'll set it together?
Alright, I'll put this one up for feedback and then we'll make this together :) Let me know which month you're most free out of May, June, September. We'll keep it in one of these if selected.
I like the idea of a 7-day readathon. The Mod Pool is a good idea. However, I don't know if I would be as motivated if it had to be about a particular country that I'm not especially interested in. I like choice of a wide range of material. Theme reads are good, but I'm not so interested in spelling games, etc.
Hey Aqsa, I have an idea that might help us out with book-voting for reading sprints and monthly buddy reads. Not sure about the coming month- July. But, it has happened in prev months and is an issue in other groups too. A lot of members vote in the polls and the threads but don't join in when it comes to reading the book. By that point, it's like they're over it. ;) Sometimes other commitments get in the way, which is fine but can't be true for all of them...
I have one idea to balance this out: by ranking members
The numbers 1-6 say, based upon buddy-reading participation. The more you participate, the higher your rank. Only thing is, it's too hard for mods to remember everyone's ranks so we can all start from 1 this month- July. (if the idea is put in place) The ranks then help with votes because say a rank 6 person votes for Artemis Fowl, that book now has 6 votes. The rank 1 person has less power. It might mean more people feel motivated to join, to improve their rank. And will balance things out between those who don't care enough.
When messaging their vote, they must remind you of their rank to enter. Not sure about polls though- maybe for those, because the books are already narrowed down, things can be equal for all?
---- Or we could ask members of a way to balance the votes because right now the most active members are a little disadvantaged. I'm sure there are other ways to fix this, and I understand if this is a little on the impractical side.
Hey Saarah,
Thank you so much :) I get you and you are absolutely right! Only a handful of members are actually active and most do vote. I'm thinking of another thing. I usually invite the members to poll directly. I'm thinking of using a broadcast message instead. I am aware that less people will find there way to the poll this way but that way, only those interested will bother to open several threads. Also, the ranking sounds like a good idea, but as you said, it is harder to implement. However, it is possible to keep track of our few active members rather than the inactive ones. We can think of a way to at least rank them. Do you think it'd be fun to announce members of the month? The top members will be considered more in next month's votes that way. We could give ranks from 1 to 3 with 3 being the highest. While adding the votes, we can count the person's rank. A person at rank 3 would be counted thrice. Normal members will be counted as 1. Moderately active members can be taken as 2. Of course, it'll be better if it is done per month. As for Reading Sprint, I find that only interested members are usually in the nomination process so perhaps we won't have much trouble there, but we can count them in the ranks because they do read more with us. What do you think?

We can rank them on the basis of participation, volunteering for leading threads, actually reading and sharing thoughts and reviews. Since we'll be doing this for boasting participation, it will be redundant to count the members playing only games. We would also need to limit the number of people who can be ranked 3 or 2.

The idea is that with the example I gave, you list maybe 6 or eight choices and you can offer people different levels of challenge. Nobody has to read anything!
CASUAL READER - read 1-2 books
INTERESTED READER - read 3-4.books
SERIOUS READER - read 5-6 books
I prefer quarterly challenges to monthly ones myself. It gives me time to find library books and to change my choices if I find something better that fits the criteria.
Three-monthly challenges can be calendar divisions or seasonal divisions (although our seasons are opposite in the different hemispheres). February is the last of the Aussie summer challenge that runs Dec-Jan-Feb. Kind of fun.
