Laura Tenfingers | 1132 comments Love this!
I'm totally in for Ana Karenina!

Also any of the above mentioned:
Jane Austen
Bronte sisters
Elizabeth Gaskell
Edith Wharton
George Eliot (I want to read Romola)
Grapes of Wrath

I really need to finish a book or two or three first though... 😨

Ok, I was looking through the comments and people have suggested lots of different books, of different genres and periods. The ones mentioned the most were:

Vilette by Charlotte Brontë
East of Eden by John Steinbeck
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

I've also seen and agree with suggestions of HG Wells, Jules Verne, Franz Kafka, and Aldous Huxley, since they do write Fantasy/Sci-fi/magical realism classics. ANNNNNDDDD... They tend to be quite short.

Shall we vote from this selection?

This is for May. We're not planning so far ahead in this thread. That way people can pick what they're in the mood for closer to the time.

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments I'm in for any of the 3 Yanique. I'm trying to add some extra to my fantasy reads to avoid the genre burn-out (aka slump).

@Zaara - I love chatting with you sweety. Promise I won't scold! Not too much anyway. :D And emotional blubbering - I love that too. :) 😘

message 62: by Zaara (new)

Zaara | 4273 comments Then I rescind my vote and @Yanique...would y'all consider picking Steinbeck for May so Laura and I can join for Villette in June 😁😁😁

I notice Oz wants in on the Brontë too.
Only if that's ok...

I read East of Eden, and it was one of the best other than SFF, though I probably won't join for a second ride since I'm swimming in TBR's...

message 66: by Lundos (new)

Lundos | 392 comments I'll finish MoI and In the Realm of the Wolf BRs and then see what you are reading. I have 5 BRs in June already and way too many real life appointments.

message 67: by Beste (new)

Beste | 1163 comments What do we have for June? Can we decide soon? (So that I check if I have the book or buy a new one (I couldn't find East of Eden, probably gave it to someone yrs ago) )
I haven't read Vilette so I'm definitely in for that one.

Anna Karenina (BR scheduled for August)
Name of the Rose (Angela? Not yet scheduled but Aug tentative)
Villette (not scheduled, Yanique)
Lark rise to Candleford (nobody interested?)
Mockingbird (anytime Siobhan and Beste say is fine)
My Cousin Rachel (various, unscheduled)

Also wanna read Catch 22 and
@Yani/@all....really want to find a reading partner for The Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony by Roberto Calasso is anybody interested??

Ok then Ahdam, let me know when you want to start reading the book.
Btw I'm totally assuming that when you said "you are interested in reading the book" that it automatically = reading the book as a Buddy Read 😂😂😂 so please correct me if I'm wrong.
Oh and my good wishes for the festive season to you and your family.

message 71: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments Yeah I want to read it as a buddy read and I'll be okay to read it sometime next month or any date you prefer

Thanks as well Zaara first days are usually hard there is about 45 minutes left till I can eat and I am so ready to gorge myself :) :) :)

message 72: by Zaara (new)

Zaara | 4273 comments Sweet of you to agree. Next month sounds good. I own the book so we can start any day you wish.
I hope there is lassi :-) enjoy...

Ok, this is not going very efficiently, mostly people just keep nominating options and we're not narrowing it down at all.

What if I say Villette for the 26th of May. What say you?

message 74: by Zaara (last edited May 17, 2018 12:49PM) (new)

Zaara | 4273 comments I thought y'all were going Steinbeck/East of Eden for this month, Yani.
I remember we talked abt this yesterday.
So if by 26th of May you actually meant 26th of June, 😃 then yep of course I'm totally in.

EDIT: Sorry for the seeming confusion, if any. I thought this place was like the "Invite thread" (but for classics) so Ahdam and I were just planning our own small separate BR here. Apos mate.

message 75: by Yanique, Thread Master (new)

Yanique Gillana | 2867 comments Mod
Well I set up this thread so we could find classics BRs for us as a group, that’s why I’m trying to get some common interest. However, very few people are responding to choose and are only nominating more books to add to the list.

I suggested the three that were most mentioned, but even though they were, I’m not seeing much interest. We also wanted to keep it low pressure and not plan to far in advanced so people who are mood readers don’t feel too locked in, like we did with Rebecca.

Seemed like a good idea at the time, but it’s not really working so far.

message 76: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments I think this thread needs a set of game rules so everyone knows what there doing so no one is throwing bits here and there maybe we can set it up like the competition with a poll but maybe a bit of organisation and a few guidelines might make things easier and straight it out so people aren’t throwing things at this thread

message 77: by Ctgt (new)

Ctgt | 134 comments I would be interested in reading East of Eden, Anna Karenina, North and South and possibly Villette.

Ahdam wrote: "I think this thread needs a set of game rules so everyone knows what there doing so no one is throwing bits here and there maybe we can set it up like the competition with a poll but maybe a bit of..."

I did post the 3 top mentions and asked people to vote on them, and most people completely ignored that. It was supposed to be a matter of picking from the most mentioned about a week before scheduling the BR. To pick one as a group.
I hesitate to make this more complicated, since that would remove some of the very reasons for starting this thread.

message 79: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 1578 comments I've been tacking too many reads lately and haven't been able to finish off many (even had to back out of Rebecca). I will keep an eye on this, but I don't want to be a major deciding factor in the next read since I'm not sure yet if I will have time to pick up another book.

message 80: by Laura Tenfingers (new)

Laura Tenfingers | 1132 comments Sorry @Yanique, I didn't vote because I'm feeling a bit overextended for May. But I'm interested in Villette so I could try.

@Zaara Big yes to Catch-22 whenever that happens.

Nice try. ;)

message 84: by Laura (new)

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments @Yanique - I'd like to read Villette with you on the 26th.

East of Eden will have to wait a bit for me since I just took 3 books of Lunar Chronicles from my library and can't get anymore till I return these.

And regarding the planning of future BRs, I'd rather not do that. Planning is what started to burn me out so I'll avoid doing it for some time. A few days or one week ahead decisions are fine with me for now - that way I can read whatever strikes the mood at the moment. :)

Em*Greedy* (Iniya) (iniya_n) | 387 comments so many classics..!!! I'm currently reading Jane Eyre..
And Already planned Anna Karenina with manju in Augusts..

message 89: by Zaara (new)

Zaara | 4273 comments So I am just counting all the votes so far....

@LaurOz (sorry, until we find a better nick I have to do this to distinguish you from Dragomchild) @Sha and @Ahdam...June for Catch-22.

@Manu, Iniya, Ctgt and Laura North and South with Hailee is ALREADY scheduled for July 10. I think we planned this read sometime in 2017. At the time the group wasn't even reading classics so Hailee's thread request was deffo prophetic 😂😂😂 sorry we planned very far ahead on this one (this thread wasn't even a dream at the time) but we can't change the date on this.

@absolutely everyone wants to read Ana Karenina 😂😂😂 in August. Wow! It is a big book. I'm scared of it, Manu. Hope its not too hard. I will be using the P&V translation. Has anyone here read War and Peace and can advise us? 😂🙈

Yanique wrote: "Well I set up this thread so we could find classics BRs for us...

@Yanique...Madam President, you wanted a consensus....and *poof* look heeeeere it is!
It only took two days 😂😜😝 I think what happened is everyone forgot abt this (its social media so short-term memory...stuff more than a day old gets forgotten) and the notifications got turned off. But then suddenly the thread got revived, bcuz of Rebecca. Tis true...classics always get pushed on the backburner.
But now we have two good ones under our belt, yes? Rebecca and Mansfield. So cheers for that. It is a very new idea and we are going strong. Don't be sad or lose heart, sweetz. We are all here behind you.
Which reminds me...I need to stop by Mansfield thred. I'll do that in a couple hours. Right now I'm in the mood to chat pulp romance with @Shaaaaa.

@ctgt...just a bump bcuz this was on your list. The read is a week out. Mebbe you can make it?

I will also be reading a P&V translation this time. Hi five!
honestly, i don't even remember which translation i read five years ago... and Zee, don't you dare race ahead... I will be reading a paperback, will be super slow and need to prepare myself for Levin's super long internal monologues.. ;)

Zaara - North and South is planned for the 20th July not the 10th, although we could change it to then if you prefer?

Hailee | 2762 comments Yanique wrote: "Ok I am scheduling Vilette for the 26th of this month and I will put the link here once it's up."

I love the fact that this group is going to be reading more classics now. Although I won't be joining in with Villette. I started it last year, not realising quite what the content would be and it caused me serious problems and got to the stage where I felt physically sick when I had to read it (I was buddy reading with another group). I had to DNF it in the end as I realised I had started this at the completely wrong time of my life. I don't see myself picking it up again in the next decade.

😂😂😂 And yep this is how the math works in my world.
Regarding your thoughts on Gillette...yeah.

@Ahdam, that's very cool. You bought the book!! Let's start on June 1 if that's ok with Laura too?
@Laura that's two books we are starting together on June 1. Wooooop!
@ctgt :-)

I somehow missed this whole thread! I saw that people were reading Rebecca but thought it was a one-off thing. When I noticed that people were reading Mansfield Park I was sure something was afoot, lol. I'm interested in joining for some of these classic BRs. Right now I'm eyeing North and South - since I already own that one. :-)
