Kat Kinzer (katsavegan) | 2 comments A group of friends from college live together in a cabin in remote New England wilderness before breaking away from each other under mysterious circumstances. I think it was in Vermont. The friends don't speak for many years after, except for the main characters - a husband and wife who married shortly after the group dissolved. This couple has an 8-year-old daughter who is very antisocial and has a real relationship with an imaginary friend, who she turns into a doll later in the book. I can't remember any of the character names. The author was American. It was published since the advent of cell phones, but I don't think the characters used smart phones. Mooses are a recurring motif. The book begins with one of the estranged friends committing suicide after receiving a postcard. All of them are artists. The husband is a woodworker and builds a canoe. The wife is a sculptor.

The friends separate after the wife unintentionally murders one of their friends during a heated argument, wherein it's revealed that both she and the friend she murders are pregnant with her future husband's children. The woman who's murdered was, at the time, in a relationship with a third female friend in the group. Many years later, the girlfriend of the woman who was murdered enlists the help of a convincing look-alike of the murdered friend to get the married couple to atone for their crimes. They also, separately, carried out a kidnapping involving a moose sculpture before the murder. It turns out that the daughter of the married couple unwittingly began the series of events by sending postcards to all of the friends anonymously in an effort to bring her parents closer together. They had separated and the father was living in the painting studio behind the house.
