Secret Codes in Library Books.

My mother used to put her initials in tiny writing at the bottom of the title page. It works well unless the library has multiple copies of the same book.

I clicked into that Twitter thread too, because I have several (many) books in my shop with a little blue sticky dot at the top left hand corner of the first page. They're all historical romances and somebody local (o_o) likes to keep a check on their reading. (Haven't yet worked out who it is, because the books come to me from different directions!)
Personally, I keep a (HUGE) spreadsheet list of all my books: including columns for 'want'; 'bought'; 'read' !! (Almost a mini-version of GR's shelves :)
Our library sticks sheets like the old ones they used to stamp the dates on in the front of the books so that people can initial them instead of the books.

As I'm quite OK with re-reading books, it doesn't bother me in the least to check out books I've read before. However, if I start noticing stuff like that, it'll bring to mind all the other stuff readers might have left behind:sneezing on pages
eating and reading (ketchup spots are the most common)
squashed bugs (ran across this twice)
reading in the bathroom or not washing hands after using the bathroom
and what do the readers who get digital books from their local library do?

My mom never did this, but she should have. I can't tell you how many times she would be halfway through a book, turn to me and say "I think I've read this before." Of course now she has a tablet, and our library has a history section of their website, so you can see what e-books you have already checked out before. She still reads some physical books, so it still happens, but not nearly as often. She has a terrible memory, and she reads a wide variety, so it's hard for her to figure it out from the title and cover.

Yes, I used to do this, too, before computers. I think my grandma or one of my aunts taught me this trick. I used to spend my summers on my aunt’s farm or in my grandma’s small town, and we could only do monthly library runs. Going to a library twice a year meant I would forget which books I had read. That’s when I learned The System.
I had forgotten all about it until I saw this pop up on my newsfeed.
