Hi folks

I've had a chat to Tadiana & we have changed the order of the group reads. High Rising will now start the 2nd of May with me leading (the second to make sure I'm back from holiday. ) Mrs. Mike will be the first of June.

Hope that is ok with everyone

Jackie | 639 comments me, too - I'd better order the book

thanks for adding me to the group!

Jackie | 639 comments the book came and I am wondering when to start - do y'all tend to read fast or slow?

message 6: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) My experience is that this group reads pretty fast, and early in the month to which a book is assigned. I’m dawdling my way through Miss Buncle’s Book and it seems as if everyone else has finished!

You are not alone, Abigail!! My library book just arrived so I will be starting Miss Buncle's Book soon.

Hi I am still on holiday in the South Island. I'm starting the read the 2nd of May & will set up the threads then.

message 12: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 639 comments Miss Buncle's Book is waiting for me at the library but I thought I'd read High Rising first.
I'm really excited because it's new to me! well, they both will be.

message 13: by Susan in NC (new)

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 2069 comments I think you might them similar, Jackie; life among the fairly well-off in rural English villages in the 1920s-30s. I’m currently reading Jutland Cottage, one of the later Barsetshire Thirkell books, and she opens with joking about how large the cast of characters has grown and how she can’t even keep them all straight!thats why I’ve read them all in order, but I ordered High Rising a couple years ago because I knew I’d want to reread at some point and wanted my own gently used copy to keep.

The font is nice and large, so I’ll probably bring it with me to the hospital next week- easy to read, and I’ll be slow!

message 14: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Sorry to hear you have to be in the hospital, Susan! I hope it’s not too awful. Definitely a light-reading moment.

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 2069 comments My brain tumor grew back- but it’s benign, so there’s that! It’s just caused my balance to be so bad, and coordination on the right side- so I’m having surgery Tuesday, and don’t know how soon I’ll be up for reading.

Susan--I'm wishing for you a safe surgery and a speedy recovery. Keep us posted whenever you can.

message 17: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Always scary to have one’s head operated on, though. I admire your sangfroid in facing this! Will be hoping for smooth sailing for you.

Elizabeth A.G. | 7 comments Hoping your surgery goes well and you're back to better health soon.

message 21: by Susan in NC (new)

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 2069 comments Thanks so much! My doctor (and I) expect a full recovery! It’s just the nuisance of a hospital stay, possible rehab, etc.

message 22: by Lesley (new)

Lesley | 250 comments Wishing you well for your surgery, Susan, and for a speedy recovery without further recurrence.

message 23: by Elizabeth A.G. (new)

Elizabeth A.G. | 7 comments Regarding High Rising -- my local library did not have this book but did offer other books by her and I had some trouble recommending a library purchase of this book. Ended up ordering a Kindle edition even though I hadn't anticipated buying the book. It was not too expensive, though, and I'll have it on hand to start by May 2nd! All set to go:)

message 24: by Susan in NC (new)

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 2069 comments Thank you, Lesley - my neurosurgeon always said I might need a second surgery, to get more of the tumor out without damage to facial nerves; just needed it sooner rather than later, and hopefully this will be it.

I hope you like it, Elizabeth - Thirkell basically wrote a book a year, so if you enjoy this book, there are plenty more! ;) I’ve lucked out over the years and found several at my local used book store, and used on Amazon!

Thanks! In the hospital, I do enjoy jello - easy to eat and mild. I’m old enough to be set in my ways and resent all the vitals checks, sleepless nights, etc., although everyone is very nice and helpful. I’m always anxious to go home, where you can have peace and quiet again! And is it just me, or do most of the staff look like babies? Sweet, sincere and professional babies, but stil...when did that happen?

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 354 comments I will be thinking of you and sending you positive, non-bored thoughts, Susan! And also, lots of ice cream, haha!

I have requested High Rising from the library, so hopefully the book will be in my hands at go time. Thirkell is completely new to me, not sure what to expect, but looking forward to reading.

Fair enough, but when they’re urging you to eat, and nothing is terribly appealing, jello is easy...

Thanks so much! Oh, dear, I hope you and Critterbee like High Rising! I find Thirkell similar to Miss Buncle, just a little sharper in her humor (but not bitchy).

You read my mind! Darling hubby is grilling us steak tonight...and honestly, I’d shudder if they offered me steak, lasagna or tacos in the hospital- I know they do their best, but everything is healthy and bland...;)

message 37: by Barb in Maryland (new)

Barb in Maryland | 674 comments Susan, enjoy your steak!
Several years ago I was in hospital X for knee surgery and the menu had great choices and the food tasted good! The next year I was back in hospital X for follow-on surgery and all the lovely food had vanished! 'What happened?' I asked my nurses. "Contract awarded at start of year to new food service group', they sighed. Low bidder with blah food won the day. Sigh...

Like dorm food in college - you don’t expect greatness, but give me a few edible items to get by on! Oh, well, luckily in this day and age of cell phone apps, Todd will find me some local goodies and bring in food if need be...

I'm hoping my laptop has been repaired & I can collect it tomorrow. I'll put up the High Rising threads Tuesday.

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 2069 comments I’m home from surgery, but my tight head bandage will make reading difficult for a couple days - but I’m still,up for Thirkell, even if I start late! I’m just so darned glad to be home, great care but home is most comfortable for just taking it easy - always hard to rest in the hospital.

Yay!! Good to read your voice again! By the time the discussion gets underway May 2 you may be a little more comfortable. This will be my first Thirkell--hoping for a winner.
