John London Matt Haig frequently introduces his strong, bold characters as statuesque and handsome/beautiful, tall and broad, and his cowardly, despicable characters as plodgy or rake-thin, having some typically abnormal facial feature, or being short and weedy. His stories seem to have a deeper meaning, yet it seems he models his characters off his real life superficial perceptions of people and how genetic beauty and goodness are tied. Of course, they are his characters, but I had the mind to share my thoughts to see if anybody else noticed this l?

P.L. Tavormina I had not. In Dead Father's Club, the family seems awkward and sad. In The Radleys, the daughter and son are both sickly until they give in to their demons, at which point they do become alluring, but that's part of the trope--and the villain is a sexy (if gross) womanizer. The parents are rather sad too, without their demons.

I do admit to crushing on the guy in How to Stop Time, he's definitely a cutie pie, and the villain there is totally repugnant.

I don't recall the villain in The Humans. Wasn't it purple aliens? I haven't read all of his books, and none of his younger stuff.
