I can't remember much about it, but I must!! It's about 3-ish generations of women in a family, so the grandmother-the mother-the daughter. I don't remember one of them at all. The second maybe grew up and married a sweet man who went to war. The woman had an affair with a doctor (very dislike able character) and they had a baby. The husband came back from war missing an eye!! (He got a fake one), and the wife had sex with the husband right away to make him believe the daughter was his. The baby comes and it's a girl. When family sees her they're saying oh look at that jaw line and her legs, are you sure that's the husbands baby?(jokingly) The father loves the daughter, but he always thinks the timing wasn't quite right. The father is a shopkeeper or something like that and the daughter helps him. One of them was electively mute for a while during her childhood I don't remember why and she lives with her uncle who kills her unofficial dog to make her talk. She does. She grows up with a raspy voice. The book mentions men like it. She plays tennis really well and loves riding horses. She has strong legs. There was one part when she feels aroused so she rubs herself against the horse. She was going to be in a sort of arranged marriage with a cocky guy but she didn't like him AT ALL!! I remember the man knew they were supposed to get married but she didn't. Originally she was going to have a meal with a man, her mother, and his mother. But, the other two conveniently left quickly. So then, I don't remember if she got married. That's it. And the book was divided by their different lives. Also, the divisions were called the characters name. Sorry for my awful punctuation. Please help. Thank you. I need to save my friend from disliking books for the rest of her life by giving a good recommendation. The book seemed old.
