I just got notification that this has arrived for me at the library ... will be picking it up tomorrow :)will be my 3rd read spanning 3 decades :0
Happened to get a copy of this from my mother-in-law. Excited to participate in my first book discussion!
I was a very avid reader when I was a kid - I'm not sure how I missed this one way back then. I'm happy to get a chance to read it before I see the movie!
I've never read this, and I wasn't looking forward to it, but I've become more excited over the last week or two. Now I'm very excited to be picking this up from the library tonight after work.
I'm going to need to purchase it, since my library has a waiting list months long.I read this book as a teen, but I don't remember much. I want to reread it.
This was one of my favorites when I was a child. I read it a few months ago with another group and it was good to re-visit it but I found that it appealed to me slightly less now that I am an adult. I still enjoyed it though.
I started reading AWIT today, and I've reached the fifth chapter. Bits and pieces remind me of Tolkien, Lewis, and Pullman.Although I have read the aforementioned authors, for some reason, I never managed to read L'Engle. I hope it is an enjoyable read. I don't mind sci fi/fantasy (or is it science fantasy?), but it is a genre that I do have to be in the mood to enjoy it.
I've been listening to audio on short car rides, and I finally started reading the book itself. Mrs which speaks very eelloonnggaatted words, it's unpleasant to hear. So I'm now reading the actual book and it's moving a little more quickly. It's still a little slow, but I have a sense (hope) something interesting is about to happen.
I finished the book last week and immediately made plans for an outing with my sister and her kids to see the movie. The kids ADORED it (the twins are six, the younger one was mostly interested in the snacks) -- I was not in love with the movie or the book. So my final verdict on all of it is that I need to stop reading books/seeing movies for young people thinking that I will love them like a child might.
True - but this just wasn't the one for me. It was fine, just not my favorite, which - judging by the "finished" thread for this one - seems to be a fairly common, if not universal, feeling. This tends to be some of the issue with books "everyone else has read." When my opinion differs, I often wonder what's wrong with me? This book, fun as it is, just felt OK to me, and since everyone else loves it, that feeds into the feeling or even let-down at times. Though, to be very fair, most books that everyone has read and everyone loves are worthy of the love.
:smiles:I do understand. There are lots of "everyone" books that I don't love, too. For example, I've tried to enjoy Anne of Green Gables several times, both as a child and more recently, and I just can't... and it makes feel a little guilty!
Ella wrote: "When my opinion differs, I often wonder what's wrong with me?"Sounds like the only thing "wrong" with you is that you are comfortable with your own opinion. :)
I've been waiting for my audio copy from the library for like 6 or 7 weeks and am still probably 3 weeks away :( :( :( lol
I am glad to see I am not the only one in this group who had to postpone this read (or listen?) until May!
