The Complete Sherlock Holmes question

Sorry about the book title but I didn't know what to put there.

Does anyone have any good suggestions for books with sleuths who are not detectives or PIs? I prefer dark and edgy to cosy. I am new to reading mystery and I would like to see the difference. I really appreciate your replies. Thank you :)
