Alicia A. | 10 comments Well, here I am. My name is Alicia, I live in SLC, UT. I read all genres but British mysteries are my favorite. For some reason I'm drawn to the broken police/detective. My favorite author is Elizabeth George (oh so broken Tommy) but I also love Val Mcdermid and Kate Atkinson. Since I've read so many British mysteries I'm finding it harder to locate good ones so I'm hoping to not only discover new authors, but get a chance to discuss books more thoroughly. OH and I love QUIRKE! I'm looking forward to being in the group.

MaureenAnn Hi Alicia, welcome to the group.
Have you ever read any Elly Griffiths novels? If not, you've come to the right place at the right time. In December, in the Focus on the Author section we're reading Elly Griffiths' first Ruth Galloway/DCI Nelson novel "The Crossing Places". Then in January, we'll be on to the second one "The Janus Stone".

Val McDermid is on my TBR list, but I have to admit I've never read any Quirke novels - I will look out for them.

Chanel (bcsaturdai) Hello fellow readers I am Chanel. I recently got in to this genre in the past two years. I have devoured books by Michael Connelly, John Sandford, and Chris Carter. I love a good mystery with blood and action. I hope to find more new series in this group.

Jennifer (jennylyn25) | 17 comments My name is Jennifer and I’m a teacher (kids during the school year & travel the country training teachers in the summer)! Love, love, love to read and spend a lot of time reading professional material. However, psychological thrillers are my go-to. The weirder, the better. My all-time favorite book is The Virgin Suicides! I reread it once a year!!! Thanks for letting me join!!

message 262: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (skcraig) Hello fellow GoodReads members (GoodsReadsers?) I love the classic mystery writers like Agatha Christie and P.D. James and Conan Doyle, as well as more hard-boiled stuff like Raymond Chandler and Elmore Leonard. The modern writers in the genre I currently love are Louise Penny, Elizabeth George, Dennis Lehane and Tana French. I am always on the lookout for good British/atmospheric mysteries that are WELL-WRITTEN -- no cheese, please! :D Excited to join and connect with others!

Hi Jennifer. Agree about the Virgin Suicides but can't say that I read it once a year. Glad you're here.

Sarah I'm with you about the no cheese please. This group is currently doing a discussion on Penny's Inspector Gamache series. I'm in love with him :)

J.S. Gill | 2 comments I am Jay. I am a new writer in this genre. I am a big fan of writers like Dan Brown even though my niche is completely different. And I would love to have an idea of what people want to read in mystery so I can improve my own storytelling.

Jay, for me leave out the romance between the detective and DA and medical examiner and paramedic and whoever. Adding a backstory of romance just kills it for me.

message 266: by Mellissa (new)

Mellissa Bushby (mellissatracybushby) | 6 comments Hi there! I'm a magazine editor, author (cookbooks) and illustrator. I live to read and devour as much of the cleverly written word as I can, especially if there are a few twists, turns, murders and a good dollop of atmosphere along the way. I love classic crime, and cunningly crafted crime, the story must be in the interaction between the razor sharp mind of the villain and the one-step-ahead detective. Not too much graphic violence for me, probably why I never took to the Kellermans. I love PD James, Nicci French, Donna Leon, Agatha Christie, Wilkie Collins, BA Paris, Shari Lapena, Colin Dexter, Elly Griffiths, Megan Miranda ... too many to mention. I also absolutely love ancient history and epic fantasy.

Thank you. I enjoyed reading “Beautiful Mystery” until I read the ending. The evil treatment of Gamache’s colleague ruined the series for me.

Nicole | 28 comments Hi, my name is Nicole. I joined late last month while home sick with a high fever and totally forgot to introduce myself. I work in research, and monitoring and evaluation (M&E), both of which require a lot of reading. I am 1000% bibliophile who reads every day, religiously. I will read almost anything but right now I have a passion for mysteries - particularly those from the Golden Age. I do read cozy mysteries but I cannot abide airhead heroines and ridiculously macho heroes. That being said, I have no shame, once it has words, I’ll read it. I cannot wait to participate the groups’ activities. Thanks for having me!

Jay, I couldn’t agree more with what Sheri wrote. It’s not a question of being prudish. It’s just that it so often is awkwardly done and adds little to the plot.

Ali (omgmangojuice) | 24 comments Hello, friends! I’m Ali. I’m 27, a longtime resident of California, an avid walker/hiker, and a travel addict. I’ve walked four continents and plan to add South America and Australia to that list someday! I’ve loved books since I could read and I’ve been telling everyone for 20 years that I’ll be a published author someday. I particularly love John Grisham, Gillian Flynn, Matthew Reilly, and anything and everything related to true crime (serial and spree killers, terrorism, cult suicides, you name it). An online gaming addiction (among other things) slowed down my reading for several years, but I’m determined to make a comeback with this year’s Reading Challenge! After nearly 8 years on Goodreads, this is my first group. I feel quite at home already. :)

Hi Ali and welcome. Getting hooked on online games isn't hard, even some of the kids games can be addicting. True crime is one of my favorite things to read. My husband thinks I'm trying to figure out a way to do away with him.

message 283: by Ali (new)

Ali (omgmangojuice) | 24 comments Assure him that a bibliophile in their right mind would never risk being limited to the selection of a prison library (lol)! My time-eating drug of choice was a particular fantasy MMORPG. I finally gave my account to a friend in June 2018 after five years of unhealthy (and frequently ridiculous) habits. I played for over sixty hours with no sleep during a “double experience points” event one weekend! I have great respect for those who can enjoy screen time in moderation, but I am not among them, so I try to keep a book/notebook in my hands or stay outdoors!

Hey, I'm Jess! I'm from Wisconsin. The last couple years I've really been getting into murder/thrillers/serial killer/etc. I'm a dental hygienist and I talk to patients about books and that just adds to my growing "to be read list"
Currently I'm reading The Woman In The Window
My s-i-l and I started and Instagram account a few months ago (@booksandcurds) to give us something that we can just for ourselves and it's definitely rekindled our love for reading!

Hi Jess. You've come to the right place because we love murder/thrillers/true crime and the like. My brother in law and nephew are dentists and my mother and niece are dental hygienist. Someone is always telling me to open my mouth :) Is the Woman in the Window being made into a movie?

Brian | 1 comments Hi all, I'm Brian from Virginia. I'm pretty new to Good Reads and just diving into some of the groups who share a love of genres with me. I'm looking forward to a fun bunch of discussions.

I'm currently reading "A Murder at Harvard" by Helen Thompson, which combines my love of history an true crime. I also love a good scary story and whodunit. Some of my go-to authors in this genre include Richard Matheson, Arthur Conan Doyle (natch!), and Preston/Child

Looking forward to some good reads and discussions!

message 294: by Bia (new)

Bia (biibii97) Hi! I'm a 23 year old who is currently studying psychology at university. I started reading when I was a child but went through a time where I didn't read at all aside from mandatory readings. Then at the age of 17 I started picking up more books and haven't looked back since. I wanted to start participating more in this community, and what better place to start than in a group that talks about my favorite genres ❤️

Hello, I'm Rouge from Canada. Lately I've been reading cozy mysteries such as the "Murder She Baked" series by Joanne Fluke and the Regan Reilly series by Carol Higgins Clark. I've also read a Roy Grace story by Peter James, which is not as cozy but still intriguing.

Overall I enjoy mystery stories where the protagonist courts danger, just because he/she really needs to find an answer, and gets an adrenaline rush in the pursuit and escape.

Annie England | 2 comments Hello everyone! My name is Annie, I'm 23 and live in Maryland. I love all sorts of books, but seem to gravitate toward mysteries and thrillers. I hope to go to law school so court room dramas are interesting to me as well. I am currently reading A Stranger In The House by Shari Lapena, i just started it but so far find it very interesting. I am always open to new book suggestions, i work up the street from the library so i am always looking for new interesting books to snag. I look forward to hearing other points of views on books i have read.
