Sorry for your loss, Sheri. The loss of a child is devastating. My son was 36, worked on Friday & went to the ER on Saturday for stomach pain. Died 3 weeks later from complications of severe pancreatitis. Such a shock. Grieving is hard … it ebbs & flows. My husband had had a stroke a few months before our son died & I think he just gave up. He had several medical issues. I can't say it's any easier after more than 3 years, but we've learned to live without them.
I was a caseworker at a residential facility for at-risk youth. Loved it, but was glad to retire when I finally made the decision. I work with my son as his payee & personal support worker. We go on various outings … usually sports-related. It's usually fun & gets me out of the house. I'm not crazy about the dirt track stock car races & often read books on my phone during the really boring parts. I think my son has gotten over being embarrassed about it.
lol one of my sisters used to read books at her children's ball games. She isn't a sports fan and has 3 children who were involved in every sport in the world. The things a mother does for her children. 😊
We have so much going on at once it's like we can't even grieve like we need too. The same evening our son died, my husbands sister died from complications from the flu. My son died at 4:45 PM and she died at 6:30 PM. And during all this, his other sister was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She's been through chemo and had surgery last Friday and is doing ok now. And to top it off, my dad had a wreck and has a traumatic brain injury and my mother was diagnosed with dementia and we've had to move them from their home to an assisted living situation. All in a matter of a few months.
I still embarrass my children and now I'm working on the my grand children. 😊

Hello and welcome to all the new members, so glad you found us and joined us! I'm never around as much as I intend to be or want to be, right now I still do a lot of babysitting for my twin 5 year old grandbabies. They wear me out and I wind up falling asleep early at night instead of reading as I planned. School starts tomorrow, so I'm hoping to have some more time on my hands... only time will tell.

I would also like to welcome all our new members - Yippee - we've just gone over the 10,000 mark. Whatever your type of crime/mystery/thriller (hard-boiled, cosy, psychological, true crime etc.) we hope you'll all find something to suit you in our monthly reads and engage in interesting discussions with our other members. I look forward to meeting you in some nook or cranny of this group.

I had not realized that, woots! Thank for bringing it to our attention.

Hi Lori. You've come to the right place. I just recently got into reading cozies and love them. I've tried to knit a time or two, bought a bunch of supplies, made a blanket, vest, toboggan or two but can't get the hang of knitting sweaters. Love the Red Hat ladies.

I had to think about your question "what is a toboggan". Then I thought to look it up online and found this funny story. Hope it will let you copy and paste the link if you have time. Keep in mind I'm in the south. My daughters mother in law has knitted 2 gigantic afghans that I use all the time. My sister knitted a cashmere blanket for a grandchild once. It was gorgeous. I have a friend, who is in the book club I attend by the way, who knits coats, sweaters, scarves, socks, all sorts of stuff and has tried to encourage me but my mind just doesn't bend that way.

I grew up in the military and lived for a year at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona. Mostly what I remember was there weren't any large trees anywhere.

Oh my goodness I should have guessed that it was a hat. I knit beanies. I make them in college colors or team colors and I add sewn on logos front and back. I used to have pics but I accidentally deleted all my pics on my old phone...I know dumb. I also belong to two book clubs. What does you club typically read?

At the beginning of each year everyone gives their want to read books and then we vote on them. Then we have to make sure the library can get what we want to read. That used to be a given but not anymore. We have a diverse group so we end up reading all sorts of books. Are both of your book clubs from your library?

No Sheri they are not associated with the library. One is an evening group that some of us formed from the Bunco group I belong too. A lot of the books they read are depressing, 900 pages long or like being back in school reading text books. The other one started out as a group of neighbors but has since become mostly red hatters from the chapter I belong to. That is an afternoon club and is an easy reading book club. Much more my style. I won't choose anything for that club that we cannot get at the library. The Bunco group is now choosing books that are more attainable with the exception of the Crawdads. I put a hold on it several months ago and I still in the high hundreds and need it by the middle of September.

It's noir. I apologize if my English isn't very good. I'll do my best to improve that skill.
Thanks very much.
Have a nice weekend.

I read mainly murder mysteries and write the same genre but make a point of not killing women to make a great story! Here's my author profile and I looking forward to our discussions! https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...
Happy reading!
Hi Elizabeth. Love your 2 sentence horror story "The teenage girl dialed her mother's number on her mobile. As soon as her mother answered she said, 'Mum a bear is eating my foot." 😄

I read books super fast and am always on the hunt for new recommendations or series. Lovely to meet all of you!

I like a variety of genres but my favorites are suspense, thrillers and historical fictions. Currently my favorite book is The Dead Key by D.M. Pulley.
I see one of the group reads for October is The Dry. I will begin with that and look forward to discussing.

I suggest you look at the novels which won the annual Edgar awards as well as those nominated for books worth reading

I'm reading The Dry too. See you in the discussion.

Hi Chris. That's a lot of favorite authors. Some of us are reading re-reading The Tower Treasure just cuz we loved the Hardy Boys. Would love for you to join us.

I'm a full-time writer now (see the author section), but let's just say here I'm an avid reader...always have been. I still read a lot in the mystery and thriller genres because I write in those genres, as well as sci-fi, but I cut my reading teeth on Agatha Christie and H. Rider Haggard. I'm binge-reading Daniella Bernett's Kirby/Longdon series right now (just finisthed #1 and #2), but I'm going to have to slow down a wee bit and do some promo work for my new novel.
Slainte to all!

Thanks for the warm invitation, my name is Colin but people call me Col. I'm new to Goodreads but am close to self-publishing my first Financial Thriller. For the present I'm a reader, I'm still finding my feet, so I may be a little coy to begin with. I read Thrillers, Crime and historical fiction.
Looking forward to getting to know you all.
Cheers,
Col

Financial Thriller. That's a new one for me. Every time I check my bank account after paying bills and there's money left I'll admit I'm a little bit thrilled. :) Welcome and good luck with the publishing.
