Jimp | 1 comments Hello Group,
James Patrick, I'm known by all as 'Jimp' - my elder brothers started that (short for JimmyP) and so it was carried over to school and then my adult life. My wife-to-be, when we first met, thought it most funny. Jimp, I find from her, [a Norwegian], in the English dictionary means: scant, slender and I am slender [long-distance runner slender]. A sport I love and love much more as it helped break the ice when I met Tordis (Tor): an angel. Tor she told me means Thor. I'm most fascinated by thriller/suspense - fiction/non-fiction and have always taken an interest in books concerning the modern history of Europe and of late more the second war and the years post those dark times. If anyone has recommendations, I would be most grateful. Happy reading to all.

John | 4 comments Hello, I’m John. I’ve been a member of your group for a year now, and believe I’ve failed to introduce myself. An appalling dereliction, I agree. From a career in design engineering, once the mortgage was paid, I took early retirement and with a large garden/orchard have become almost self sufficient: my responsibilities at present rest with a small group of not-so-able hedgehogs. The neighbours became aware that I was caring for a hog with one-eye and a hospice seemed to blossom from there. Returning to university, I read history and that led me to such works as: The Great Game - The Struggle for Empire in Central Asia, On Secret Service East of Constantinople - The Plot to Bring Down the British Empire, and the like; all of which gripped me and I class as exceptional thriller/suspense/mysteries. My grandmother on my mother’s side was White Russian and as youngster she left Russia in 1921 under the care of her father and mother - her father was killed in Ukraine - and she made the crossing from France to Blighty with her mother in November of 1923: from their accounts the journey across Europe was most harrowing. My mother has the family book and the the dairies of both her grandparents - I have often thought of creating a manuscript from those, but feel unqualified and not able to do justice to their story. There is no mention in my great-grandparent’s memoirs of escape lines and safe houses, but my grandmother, during her later years with what she excused as her failing memory, often spoke of ‘the kindest of people’ and how they are the only reason she survived. I spend time researching escape-lines, underground networks and life-in-the shadows. I won’t claim a need to find evidence of who might have helped my grandmother, as I am content with a desire to more fully understand the ways and means by which many sought to resist oppression even in the face of the great risk to them and their family. I yearn for well-researched, real-life thrillers focused on 20th Century Europe.

Welcome Jimp. So, you're planning a wedding soon?

and welcome John carer of hedgehogs. You have quite a story.

Happy to have you both in our little group.

Robbie | 2 comments Hi all, I’m Robbie.
Formerly with the ambulance service, I now work in Brussels and drive expensive four-door saloons to earn a shilling. Consequently, although it is frowned upon, I occasionally find time in the working day when I can turn a few pages. I lean towards political intrigue and fact based thrillers.

Oh, and I always judge the book by its cover - always! :D

bekka (subrosaes) | 1 comments Hi! I’m Bekka and I’d love to make some more friends on here! Please feel free to add me if you have similar interests in books. :) My favorite genres are: fantasy, mystery/crime, sci-fi, dark academia, and historical fiction, but I love to branch out and am always looking for book recommendations and challenges!

message 559: by LTJ (new)

LTJ (ltj81) Greetings, everyone! My name is LTJ and I've been reading pretty much all my life. I grew up reading mostly horror and mystery as I just got back into being an avid reader again late last summer after years of not reading. I spent most of that time gaming and wow, once I got back into reading again, I haven't really gamed as much.

Perhaps I'm getting older or gaming just isn't as fun as it used to be but at any rate, I got back into reading strictly horror but a part of me misses that rush of a great mystery! I did some research and found this group here on Goodreads as I can't wait to read your monthly group reads starting in May :-)

I'm looking forward to connecting with you all and discovering new mystery authors and novels. I hope you all have a wonderful end to your weekend and well, happy reading!

message 560: by Tj (new)

Tj | 2 comments Hello everyone - I’m TJ. A reader for my whole life, I’ve really gotten into crime fiction history over the past several years. In fact, I recently wrote my master’s thesis on early American hardboiled detectives and their modern Nordic counterparts.

Though crime fiction has always been my favorite, I do read other genres. Among them are historical fiction, horror (in the fall), and classics. I *love* WWII stories.

I’m looking forward to joining the chats, and following the monthly read recommendations. Cheers!

Welcome to our group.

LTJ, I've never been a gamer but know lots of people who are. Maybe you can divide your time between gaming and reading. I'm not much on horror but love mysteries of all types.

Tj, I love WWII stories and historical fiction too.

Hope everyone finds something to enjoy.

message 563: by LTJ (new)

LTJ (ltj81) @Sheri: That's awesome many others here are into gaming and yeah, I wouldn't mind getting back into daily gaming but the gaming/Esports industry has the same competitive games. I'm anxious for something new, fresh, and innovative that will push the envelope and not just be like League of Legends, Call of Duty, or Apex Legends.

Hopefully, this fall/end of the year such a game will come out to make me sink a plethora of time in! I'm excited to read some more mysteries and discuss them with you and everyone here :-)

message 564: by Mary (new)

Mary | 6 comments Hi, to everyone. My name is Mary. I still class myself as a young adult and impressionable: still an innocent. I'm the only person in my family that reads: they laugh at me. I started out with run-of-the-mill thrillers: I shan't mention titles. My family say, "Why waste your time and money. Watch the film."
I've moved on and I'm now reading what I believe is 'good stuff'.
I've just read, 'Cossack', by Ronald Mcqueen: HOG publications. Do you class them as an independent publisher?

LTJ (ltj81) @Mary: Welcome and that's pretty awesome! I know a lot of people might look at us avid readers a certain way but eh, I never let it bug me. They're just jealous we can enjoy a great novel instead of an adaptation of it on TV or in theaters :-)

I am the youngest of my family and lived in a small house with all my brothers, my mum and her boyfriend. My brothers are just thugs: never work, sit in front of the telly all day, drink, fight and cause trouble. I used to work in a supermarket (shelf-stacker) and read on the bus when going to and from work. An elderly gent used to say, "hello," every morning and once asked me about my book. I wasn't too complimentary. He said, "a good book teaches you something." that comment put me on a path to learn from my reading. I joined Goodreads and since have moved to live with a lady who once taught English and History. Her son, who I think must know just about everyone in the country, found me a job in a garden centre and paid for me to go to Open University. My life has changed, I am the luckiest girl in the world and all because of a man on a bus.

message 568: by LTJ (new)

LTJ (ltj81) @Mary: Anytime, my new friend! I see, thanks for sharing that as I only have one little brother, he's in the Marines and before I got my dream job as an Editorial Director, I worked in retail electronics for over 15 years (never again) and I lost track of reading. I mostly read sports articles (I'm a professional writer/editor) but went many... many years without touching a novel.

I love that quote the guy on the bus told you, it's true! A good book teaches you something. I love how things changed so nicely for you because well, you deserve it :-)

message 574: by Joe (new)

Joe Palkovic | 4 comments Hello all. Thought I should introduce myself. Not new to reading a great mystery, but I am somewhat new to Goodreads. I'm hoping to find an awesome community here.

My love for mystery goes back to childhood with the Sherlock Holmes stories adapted for children, which I remember my brother reading to me while staying up late at night. I also love a great ghost story for the same reason.

As an adult I have been drawn to the police procedurals like the Harry Bosch series by Michael Connelly, and my tastes branch out to SciFi and Fantasy as well. Open to anything in any of those genres as long as it's great.

What are you reading right this minute is what I want to know.

Thanks and God bless!

Joe

I work in hospitality: a plush establishment, patronised by more gentle, conservative folk. I work. I walk. I read. I work. I walk. I read.
I don't know just yet what I really wanted to read, I'm just picking books from the small library where I work. I hope to find friends and share thoughts on what I do read.
I'm very new to this: I'm all ears or should I say, "All eyes."

message 576: by LTJ (new)

My name is Regina and I'm from the Philippines. I love to read mystery/thriller/suspense books. I enjoy reading Agatha Christie's books, Gillian Flynn, Mary Higgins Clark, and a lot more. I haven't tried reading Lisa Jewell's books but I will try soon. I'm looking for new friends and some good recommendations as well. Thank you :)

message 584: by Joe (new)

Joe Palkovic | 4 comments @*°•.˜”*°• Sheri •°*”˜.•°* yes, the series was written by Michael Connelly, and also made into a series on Amazon Prime TV a few years ago. I enjoy both the books and the TV show. My wife thinks it's a bit vulgar and slow moving, but I like the pace, it makes it feel more real to me. I think real life mysteries take a little time to build on themselves. Right?

Lately I have been trying to expand my collection to include some fiction mystery/crime/thrillers as well.
