Anyway this was a freebie i had gotten off either amazon or nook, i cannot recall as this was several years ago.
The cover of the book was orange toned and had a native american man on it
The first part, whether the prologue or chapter one, contains a scene were two mothers were in a covered wagon. One was suffering from milk sickness, as her child had died and she was overproducing milk, so her sister shoved her daughter to be nursed to help. Around this time, the caravan was attacked by native people and everyone was slaughtered except the one woman and her sister's baby, who were hiding in the brush just a short distance away. The sister was a jealous sort, i do recall. Anyway, she takes her sister's baby and raises her as her own on a plantation or something in...Georgia i want to say? I recall humidity being mentioned several times, as were slaves.
Anyway, as the daughter grows, she learned that the woman she thought was her mother actually isnt and they all learn that the girl's mother may very well still be alive within the native tribe that attacked them.
So the girl sets out with one of the family slaves or sommat and she winds up finding the tribe that took in her mother. And it turns out the native american man she falls for was raised by her mother after his own had passed away!
Somewhere down the line the story mentions a fort of some sort and also another native tribe warring with the one our story focuses on. The girl stays with the tribe for a bit but then decides to return home
But riding the horse through town she's snubbed because her skin had drkened and made her look like one of the natives.
This is basically all i can remember but for the life of me i cannot recall who the author is or what the title was and its been bothering me for MONTHS.
Oh! I also think i recall a character's name being Violet??
If yalls could help, it would be greatly appreciated. I remember liking it and would like to know if my own opinion of it has changed as time progressed
