I really like the writing style in these types of books (if you like this sort of style I recommend the The Memory Keeper's Daughter, and they both talk about family) because they're able to tell the story through these small almost insignificant details while still keeping the main focus on the plot.
Plus the transitions they made from the past to the future was, although confusing, were well done. They would focus on one detail, and go to the next scene focusing on that.
It was a confusing book because of those time and point of view shifts constantly. For example one second it could be talking about the uncle's failed marriage, then the communist revolution, and then back to one of the twins point of view about their mother. I'm currently rereading it because of that.
One other thing that irked me was, there are a couple scenes in there that are rather crude and graphic, one of them involving a minor. There aren't very many though.
Overall I'd give this book a 4/5! I like the plot and the writing but it's still confusing even now.
