Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments I saw Mary Poppins Returns.
Although I hadnt read the books I do remember the original Mary Poppins film with Julie Andrews. The sequel was ok as far as sequels go though Emily Blunt is just not Julie Andrews... but if you get over that its a good film...it just was lacking a bit of the mad humour IMHO.

I dont know if anyones done a whole movie spoof of Mary Poppins but remember the Simpsons once had an episode featuring a nanny called Sherry Boppins. And The Nanny tv show was quite hilarious.

Had a root canal last Wednesday. Dentist says they hardly ever get infected. Guess what. Friday night I'm thinking I should not be having so much pain two days afterwards. Saturday night cheek began to swell. Sunday morning it was huge! Dentist ended up coming in on Sunday to drain. Gave me antibiotic and Tylenol 3. The codeine makes me want to sleep all day. Today is better but still some pain and swelling. On the bright side I have had lots of time to read for the last 3 days (when I'm not sleeping).

Thanks. I had one a year ago with no pain and no complications. Not so lucky this time.

Emeri | 8 comments What do you think of when you think of the movie Aladdin? I feel like the movie Aladdin is the only Disney movie named after a male character but is best known for its Disney princess. When you think of the movie Pocahontas, do you immediately think John Smith?

I haven't seen Pocohontas but when I think of Aladdin I think of Robin Williams as the Genie.

I saw the live musical a few weeks ago it was really good! Would recommend. I always think of the Genie when Aladdin is mentioned and the song 'A whole new world' and the flying carpet.

My granddaughter loves the Disney princesses and names all her cats after them. They had 1 male cat and named it Olaf after the character in Frozen. Me- I cant remember any of their names- the cats or the princesses.

Sad day! I just found out our small town library had a water pipe burst in an apartment above it. Almost everything was destroyed and the library is closed for quite a while. I had two books waiting for me to pick up and they were destroyed along with quite a few other books that belonged to other libraries. My librarian friend told me insurance should cover 100% but still sad to think of all the books that lost their lives.

message 64: by Selina (new)

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Eek. One time that same thing happened in the library I worked in but thankfully not too many books were damaged although the carpet was sodden. It was a big rescue mission and we had to close the library and dry everything out.

One of the libraries near me is relocating to the newer centre as theres a lot of expansion going on with town development. So thats going to be closed for a couple of weeks. Its kind of interesting working in a library that is closed to the public for a while, as so used to being open all the time with borrowers coming in and out that its kind of nice to have the library all to yourself. Holiday time for librarians.

This might sound like a dumb question but...Does anyone know why the picture section in a book doesn't count towards the total number of pages in the book?

message 66: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 2008 comments That sounds like a Kindle question. One that can only be answered by the Dark Overlords of Kindle.

Fishface wrote: "That sounds like a Kindle question. One that can only be answered by the Dark Overlords of Kindle."

Oh no. Every book I've ever read with a glossy picture section has ever counted the picture section towards the page count.

message 68: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 2008 comments What about non-glossy picture sections? The books with the photos worked right into the text?

Fishface wrote: "What about non-glossy picture sections? The books with the photos worked right into the text?"

I believe those would count in the page count.

message 70: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 2008 comments But in many books with glossy photo sections, the page numbers are right there in the photo pages. How can they NOT count? And who said they don't count, anyway? Don't count towards what?

I guess I didnt explain. I'm in a group called Paging All Bookworms and instead of keeping track of how many books you read you keep track of how many pages you read. And there is usually another monthly challenge too. So, the book I just finished stops at page 122, then has 10 pages of pictures, then starts reading again at 123. Its no big deal, I just wondered why they do that and dont count the picture section in the total number of pages of the book.

message 72: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 2008 comments Not enough words on those pages?

message 73: by Selina (new)

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments It doesn't count as part of the manuscript or the narrative? I don't know for sure but usually publishers will insert pics in later and then just reference them with figures. Its usually because of the printing process requires different types of paper and they have to count the printed pages typeset when they do it in one batch.

Our main branch library has an adult reading program in the winter. This year they decided to do a year long program. Each month you have to read a book that matches the challenge for that month. For example, this month it was to read a book about Minnesota or takes place in Minnesota. You write the book you read on a slip of paper that gets you entered in a monthly drawing I won the March challenge and a $20 gift card for Barnes and Noble!!!

If the guy has a third arm growing out of his chest that beats him unconscious every night to pay for all his sins and bad deeds. I'm probably not interested. LoL

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Hi TJ I'm reading one right now that I think you might like called The Power of a Plant: A Teacher's Odyssey to Grow Healthy Minds and Schools by Stephen Ritz.

The first part he does write about growing up in the 80s so I think you could relate to that (I'm and 80's child myself) . I am a sucker for inspirational stories by teachers. And I love gardening so am really into this one!

In a similar vein is The Freedom Writers Diary by Erin Gruwell (it was made into a movie) and also Frank Mc Courts Teacher Man

I thought this was a cute story for a group that likes to read about people's lives:

Last October I went to an estate auction. I did not know the man who had recently passed away. The house was jammed packed with treasures (junk), most of which were not worth much. The guy must not have thrown away a magazine his whole life but those did bring a pretty good price. I toured the house because it was for sale and it was filthy and in disrepair but someone bought it for $5,000 and is fixing it up. So I assumed the man and his wife must not have had much in life. Yesterday I read in the paper that over $800,000 dollars was donated from his estate to various local charities, the biggest donation was over $500,000 to a local scholarship program. He never had children. Goes to show you cant judge a book by its cover.

message 94: by Selina (new)

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Oh wow. Yea you never know. I find that couples that don't have children tend to invest more in their hobbies and good causes.

Question for everyone, on something completely different.
What's better or what social media do you use the most? Any of us that don't use any?

I only use Facebook. I tried Twitter once but thought it was boring. Facebook takes enough of my time so I dont think I need anything else. I resisted Facebook for a long time until my 29 year old niece was dying of cancer and that was the best way for family to keep up with what was going on with her.

Yea I just use FB. I used linkedin for a while but I think I only need one social media. They sent me way too much junk notifcations, like work anniversaries and really boring business stuff. I dont want to talk about other peoples work, esp outside of work! Twitter, just seems to be the same as facebook but without the pics. And instagram, FB without the words. If FB ever shut down, it would be a loss, but all the others could shut down and it wouldnt affect anything. It lasts a lot longer than myspace did (which I was only on for a day or so! )

Ah but I do miss Shelfari...

message 99: by Selina (new)

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Whats the difference between Pinterest and Instagram. Am not on either.

Discussion forums..am on a few but I don't really count them as social media. I guess because they are special interest groups.

message 100: by Fishface (last edited Apr 13, 2019 08:22AM) (new)

Fishface | 2008 comments Instagram is like a photo weblog documenting your every thought and move in photos that automatically disappear after a short time, so you have to keep adding more photos. Pinterest is a way of saving information in photo files -- recipes, sales outlets, gift-giving ideas -- that can lead to discussion and resource sharing between members. It's only a semi-social medium really.
