SOLVED. YA Science Fiction: man raises bugs and it gets out of hand. [s]

My boyfriend read a book in 2006 or 2007 about a man who raises some bugs and he eventually starts feeding them dogs and possibly humans, maybe even his girlfriend. The bugs grow more and more intelligent as the book progresses. They eventually form a picture of the man's face and the end of the book they have grown to the size of humans.

I know this may be a long shot, as this book seems a little weird, but any help would be appreciated! Thank you!
