ABANDONED. Religious souls sci-fi horror ; He wanted to prove once and for all that heaven existed, and experimented on people but couldn't get a lock on where the souls were going

So, about 10 years ago i read a book, it was all about a scientist/religious man, maybe a priest, who wanted to track peoples souls after they died. He acted like a kind of popstar in the book, set a little in the future, where his sermons were broadcast in vr to people. He wanted to prove once and for all that heaven existed, and experimented on people but couldn't get a lock on where the souls were going because everyone only died once of course. But he found someone, can't remember male/female, who seemingly dies temporarily in their sleep often enough for his experiments to work.

I think one of the main badguy characters dressed all in black as he had a skin condition that meant sunlight hurt/killed him.

The priest kills himself, and broadcasts 'his soul talking' as he finds out where souls actually go, which is actually hell. Which was anti-sunlight guy's plan all along.
