20.5 - Bigger Is Better - Frugalitymom's Task: Well Behaved Women Seldom Make History

In May I graduate with my Master's in History and one of my favorite quotes is
"Well Behaved Women Seldom Make History" by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich.

For this task pick one option from below to read that involves history and help celebrate my graduation with me.

No books with the genres children or kids are allowed for this task.

Required: Identify the option.

Option 1: One of my areas of study is Early American History. For this option pick one book from Book Riots 100 Must Read Books of U.S. Historical Fiction.

Option 2: Another area that I study is Early Modern British History, specifically the Tudors. For this option pick a fiction or non fiction book that covers either Henry VIII, one of his wives, or one of his children (Elizabeth, Mary, or Edward.) You can go here for a list of his wives.

Option 3: Of course in any history I read I look for the women especially for those whose stories have yet to be told. For this option please read a book where the first letter of each word of the title and subtitle can be found in "Well Behaved Women Seldom Make History." Titles must be at least three words in length.

Option 4: I began my journey in college in 2004 when my son was only 4 and through the years I have taken breaks along the way but I never gave up. I obtained my associates in May 2007, my bachelors in December 2015, and I will be getting my masters in May. For this option read a book FIRST published in May or December from 2007-2018 inclusive.

frugalitymom (frugalitymom) | 2 comments For Option 3 the book doesn’t need a subtitle but if it does have one then each first letter of each word in the subtitle must be found in the phrase “Well Behaved Women Seldom Make History”

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4473 comments Question re Option 3 .... MUST the book have a subtitle? Or are books with a 3-word+ title but with no subtitle allowed?

message 8: by frugalitymom (new)

frugalitymom (frugalitymom) | 2 comments No as long as it’s at least 3 words. Subtitle is there in case your book has one.

Thank you and remember there will be rough days but take breaths and tackle each day as it comes.

steph (librarianish) (steph_davidson) | 540 comments Regarding Option 3, I was going to use Turtles All the Way Down, but there's only one "T" in the target phrase, and two in the title. The task doesn't specify that letters may only be used as often as they appear, but is there an SRC default rule regarding this? Thanks!

message 12: by frugalitymom (new)

frugalitymom (frugalitymom) | 2 comments I’m not sure about a default rule the mods would have to answer that. I should have specified on the letter could only be use once. So for your title two beginning t’s wouldn’t work. If the mods could chime in I would appreciate it.

This is the standard rule.

Kirstie (kirstienaughton) | 56 comments Would The Boleyn King by Laura Andersen work for Option 2 as it covers Anne Boleyn and Elizabeth even though it's "what if" about a fictional son between Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn?

Yes that would work

Ed Lehman | 809 comments I just want to make sure that for Option 3 the book does not need to have "History" as a genre. Planning on reading Take Me Out: A Play

message 19: by frugalitymom (new)

frugalitymom (frugalitymom) | 2 comments It can be any genre but that title won’t work since subtitles are counted and there isn’t a P in the phrase.

oh..ok..I didn't realize that would be considered a subtitle. Thanks...glad I checked.

Ed Lehman | 809 comments I think Stuck Rubber Baby works for Option 3 right, no problem with graphic novels?

message 22: by frugalitymom (new)

Unfortunately, graphic novels cannot be used for this task. Please see the Rules of the Challenge:

"5. Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may only be used for 5, 10, and 15 point tasks unless specifically allowed in the task description for a higher point task. "

Ceelee Question about Option #2. The task states to read a book about one of Henry VIII's wives or children. But if we find a book about all of his children, would that work too, or do you just want to stick with the one child or wife?

The book I am talking about is THE CHILDREN OF HENRY VIII by Alison Weir.

The Children of Henry VIII

Ceelee Thanks! I love books about British royalty, both nonfiction and fiction! This one has been on my TBR for a long time! Congratulations on your graduation too!

Ed Lehman | 809 comments Would The Shadow Line by Joseph Conradwork for option 3? I see some editions have a hyphen between shadow and line.
