Deborah Crews | 3 comments Hello, I just joined this group. I am looking for a book suggestion for a historical romance that mixes the subgenres of Western and Victorian or Regency themes. I've read Shirl Henke and am looking for more. Anyone have something they can recommend I read?
Thanks so much,
Deborah

Minerva Spencer (minervaspencer) Judith Ivory's book The Indiscretion comes to mind. While it isn't set in the American West it features a cowboy in England and is pretty entertaining. Good luck!

Mariana | 2692 comments Savage Thunder (Wyoming, #2) by Johanna Lindsey Savage Thunder by Johanna Lindsey was a pretty mediocre book in my opinion, but I think it would fit this criteria.

Elizabeth Hoyt’s Legend of the Four Soldiers series might be one worth checking out, though it is Georgian time. Events from the French and Indian War are important to the series arc. There are 4 books:

To Taste Temptation
To Seduce a Sinner
To Beguile a Beast
To Desire a Devil

I didn’t enjoy this much, but Until You has a heroine who spent much of her childhood in West, traveling.

Is that the one with a Virgin widow and they do 'it' on a moving horse?

Deborah Crews | 3 comments Just bought all three on amazon kindle - looking forward to reading. Thank you new group!

I don't even remember. I remember that she was a virgin and rich. She hired him to help protect her, and I know there was a scene with them being ambushed in a canyon. I marked it as a bodice-ripper.

Yeah it probably was since I don't remember the first sex scene.

I was not aware of the term bodice ripper when I read JL books, but now, I think almost all her books could be marked b-r.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 584 comments The Lion's Lady (Crown's Spies, #1) by Julie Garwood has these themes. The heroine was raised by Native Americans but she is an English heiress.

I didn't enjoy it all that much but I know others who love it.

I loved it!

Shannon | 348 comments I admit it, I'm hooked on Caroline Linden and Anna Harrington

And may I add how much I have truly enjoyed this group! I've learned a great deal and I feel I shall never be short of new reads. Goodreads has become my favorite place to hang

Jan (jan130) | 2751 comments Forgiving Forgiving by LaVyrle Spencer has been around for a while but it's a lovely slow-burn romance and kinda fits your criteria. Ms Spencer has written a couple of others that are also in that category. Old school but great books.

And what about Jo Goodman? e.g. True to the Law True to the Law (Bitter Springs #2) by Jo Goodman

Or Kaki Warner Pieces of Sky Pieces of Sky (Blood Rose, #1) by Kaki Warner . An Englishwoman in the wild West.

Lynn (lynninoz) | 3 comments Help please. I have finished all of Georgette Heyer's books (many times) and am looking for a similar author. Regency romance, funny, great characters, good writing style. Please no "bodice rippers". Suggestions? Oh, and paper based please.

Thanks

Lynn,

Have you tried Clare Darcy? She was a bit younger younger than Georgette Heyer. I found CD via NoveList while searching for authors
“ like” GH. This was pre-GR membership. At that time, CD books were out of print, so I had to buy used copies. My library doesn’t keep old books, but your library might have a book or two by CD that you can try.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1635 comments I forgot to mention, CD books, like her heroine GH, had no s dual content.

Lynn (lynninoz) | 3 comments Thanks very much for the recommendations!

message 18: by Mariana (new)

Mariana | 2692 comments I admit I have only read one Georgette Heyer book. I rated it 5 Stars, so I'm not sure why that is.

However, I second the suggestion of Mary Balogh. I thoroughly enjoyed the Bedwyn series starting with Slightly Married.

If you are looking for specifically clean romances, Grace Livingston Hill comes to mind. I have not read her in a long time, certainly well before Goodreads; but I remember enjoying her books. There is also Kristi Ann Hunter. Both of these are blatantly Christian writers and that colors their stories.

You might also enjoy Lorraine Heath. I specifically recommend Always to Remember, but it is set in Civil War era.
