I am in the midst of doing the same. I'm trying to get through The Afghan Way of War: How and Why They Fight. The first part was a very academic historiographical essay (it reads like the first chapter of a Ph.D. dissertation - which it probably was). Im currently into the 2nd Anglo-Afghan War (1878-79) and it gets much better. I needed some fluff to keep my brain somewhat focused. I just finished Half a King. It was a very quick read - done in about a day or so. A crippled prince, not the heir, quickly becomes king and loses his throne. A nice little book and the first in a series - the remainder will be published late this year.
Presently, in the lighter category as well is Prince of Fools. Only just started and another fantasy in the vein of George RR Martin.

I'm about 100 pages further into The Thirty Years War: Europe's Tragedy. Talking about Gustavus Adolphus, which is cool.For my fiction, I am reading some Charles Sheffield -- Divergence. Already finished Summertide, it was just ok. The 2nd book is picking up a bit.
I've got about 60 pages left in Game Theory: A Very Short Introduction. Hoping to get through it quickly as I'm thinking of starting The Guns of August

Danubia is fucking awesome. Very irreverent and fun.
Catastrophe is really good too, in a different way.
I was about to buy an ebook copy of OpTale, but fucking pdf format, srsly? Grrr. Is there a way to get an epub or mobi format? -- these convert well in calibre. pdf format is shitty on a e-reader and does not convert well.

It's something I've thought about doing, I just kind of forgot about the book for a while.
In fact I just looked through an old hard drive and it doesn't look like I even have the final version in word anymore. I'll have to try to recover it from the PDF to convert it.
