Suggested
break down of reading so that you can check in and let us know how you're doing. The following breakdown is purely a suggestion and is therefore not set in stone.Rather than putting dates for each section I've done it so that it takes into account that not everybody will necessarily have the book at the same time.
Week 1: 58
Week 2: 58
Week 3: 58
Week 4: 58
Week 5: 58
Week 6: 58
Week 7: 58
Week 8: 58
I just finished Part 1. I am interested in this world and the story, but none of the characters have me invested quite yet. I think this will change as the connections between them all solidify.

Maybe I’m being fussy here, and I’m going to try really hard to ignore it, but the linguistics of this world don’t work for me. I’m having a hard time keeping track of the names of people / places / things. I feel like the speech patterns aren’t cohesive. Sometimes the characters sound very modern and other times almost medieval. And on a couple of occasions a character will be missing a part of speech maybe to sound like they’re foreign to the setting? But not all the time?
I haven't started it yet. I was planning to start it soon. From the reviews I read it looks like you're not the only one to have this problem but they say it gets better.
If you folks decide to read Crooked Kingdom (book #2) at some point, I'd definitely be interested! I really enjoyed Six of Crows.
I'm about 150 pages in. I haven't really noticed the linguistics specifically, but perhaps that's why I'm having a hard time connecting to the characters. The story is getting more interesting now though!
I'm 142 pages in and I'm sucked into the story enough now that my previous complaints are sliding. I like Kaz and I'm really feeling Inej. And definitely intrigued by Nina and Matthias.

I am 3/4 of the way through this book and am a little disappointed. For some reason, it's not pulling me in. I do like the characters and the plot is a good plot but I'm just not feeling it. I wonder if any of the characters will die. The backstories for the characters are also compelling.
Done! Anyone else? I didn’t really love this book but I didn’t dislike it. I’m going to read Crooked Kingdom at some point because I do want to know how it all shakes out.
I’m listening to the auidiobook, and am 40% finished. I can’t decide if the obvious parallels between the fantasy world’s countries and ethnicities and our own world are a bug or a feature! I do like a good heist, so I am optimistic that I’ll enjoy the story. The characters are interesting, and I like the shifting viewpoints. (Changing narrators helps a lot with this.)
I have about 60 pages left I think. I'm hoping to finish this weekend. I am still really enjoying this. It's not my favorite book ever but I think most the characters are intriguing and I really like the plot.
I have a couple of questions for you folks! 1. Do you want to extend this read into April?
2. Does everyone plan on reading the next book when this one is complete? (Crooked Kingdom)
Let me know!
I think we should extend into April. I just finished Heir of Fire which was long and I have The Immortalists out from the library which I have to get back soon. I will try to attempt to read them both at the same time however.
I'm not sure about Crooked Kingdom just because I don't have it my plan right now. I guess it depends how hooked I get on the series.
It seems like there are enough folks who have not had a chance to either get a copy of the book or finish it to push it out another month. I will move it to the April Buddy Read folder now.
Since I'm done I'll just pop into the April thread for conversation, and I'd be up for Crooked Kingdom in May if anyone else wants to read it.
I haven’t had a chance to start Six of Crows yet, so I will comment on it in the April thread next week. I have my copy of Crooked Kingdom already, so I plan to read that as well.

Hi Mary! I do not intend to read Crooked Kingdom, so please don't add me to that particular group read. Thanks!
Lindsay - I read back to your earlier post and I'm having a hard time with the beginning too. I had to read it over. This book so far reminds me of A Clockwork Orange. I read the first two chapters but I'm going back and reading them again because I just feel a little lost.
Joan yes that’s how I felt. That’s why this book ended up in my “like, not love” pile. It does get easier though. The author hits her stride maybe 1/3rd in, if you can hang in there.
Finished this yesterday. I'll still follow the discussion through April though. I liked it, not as much as I wanted to. I will join in for the second one if we're going to do that at some point. Here's my review:

I enjoyed this, and I’m interested in the sequel but hadn’t worked it into my challenge plan... I may join in if a May buddy read happens.
I finished this book today. I did like it. I didn't love it. After reading some other comments on other groups it seems like maybe it would have made more sense if I read the Grisha trilogy before this book. At some point I will probably read that series and the 2nd book of this series but I'm not rushing out to do so.I really did like the ending though and it did kind of hook me to read the second one sooner but I have too many other books that I need to read this year.
What did everyone else think??
I agree with you Joan, I'm interested enough to get to the second one eventually but I have several other books that have bumped it down the list.
Do folks want to read the next book in May? Or put it off until another time? As long as two or more of you want it in May, I will create a thread. Let me know!
