It's a science fiction novel, the story takes place in Scotland after a nuclear war, people still wear radiation suits. There are 3 main characters, two men and a woman. One man gets hit by a horse and carriage, but his consciousness is transported to a parallel universe, where he survived. He bases a religion on this fact and becomes a prophet, saying you can't actually die, because in a different universe you'll go on living. Someone tries to shoot him (I think he does, but I'm not sure) and he says it's alright, because he'll just be transported to the next universe where he survives. The book ends in the original universe, where the woman and the other man got together and they are wondering what would've happened if the first man didn't get hit by the carriage and died.
I thought I found the book as Michael G. Coney's 'Charisma', but it wasn't it. I hope someone can help, it would be such an awesome surprise for my husband! Thank you!
