What are you reading this month? What new books are you reading this month?

What's on your pull list? What was added this month? What was dropped?

Mera, Queen of Atlantis (1 of 6)- Mera recovers from her recent injuries and gets new problems.
Justice League of America 25- the League gets new members and and an old threat
Jessica Jones 17- the title is almost over as Kilgrave makes a surprising offer

Blue Beetle 18- Jaime gets a good wrap up for his FINAL ISSUE

Robert | 46 comments Just finished Vader DownVader Down after tackling Darth Vader Omnibus Vol. 1Darth Vader Omnibus Vol. 1.

This story of the dark lord of the Sith is much better than I expected. I was worried that knowing his ultimate end would sour any sense of tension in a Darth Vader story. But I found that rather then thinking "I already know he gets away and doesn't die here" became a compelling, "I wonder how he's going to get out of this one."

Definitely the best "villain" solo title I've ever read.

It's crazy that this is the first time Mera's ever had her own series! How was the first issue?

I completely agree!

I am enjoying the other Star Wars titles as well. I just finished Star Wars, Vol. 5: Yoda's Secret War and started Star Wars: The Screaming Citadel. I love Aphra and her droids.

Have you read or do you plan to read any of the other Marvel Star Wars titles? Have you read any of the pre-Marvel Star Wars books?

The best first issue I've read recently is Sleepless. I love fantasy comics, the art is beautiful, and it has a great set up.

I am really excited to keep going with this series. Is anyone else reading it?

I liked it, but then, I've always been a Mera fan. It was done decently, and ties in to recent Aquaman issues, so she's still recovering from her magically induced sickness.

Wayland Smith | 263 comments This week's comic shop run:

Star Wars 44- Leia tries to recruit the Mon Cal into the Rebellion
X-Men Gold 23- with most of the team in jail, who's going to protect the city and the school?
Nightwing 40- 'Wing has to manage a desperate escape and try and beat the Judge
Harley & Ivy/Betty & Veronica 6- the silly mini comes to an end.
Green Hornet 1- Britt has been missing for weeks. Who will don the hate and cape? Well, the cover is kind of a clue...
Avengers 683- we learn why Jarvis has been so sick and the team learns a secret
Black Lightning: Cold Dead Hands 5- BL vs Tobias Whale. If you watch the show... this isn't that similar.
Bombshells 13- the Batgirls meet Black Canary
Green Arrow 38- the trial of Oliver Queen which read oddly like a series finale, but wasn't.
Hawkeye 16- Clint and Kate clash with Madam Masque and Eve in this FINAL ISSUE
Shadow/Batman 6 of 6- the conspiracy ends as the heroes fight Ra's and Khan.

I am on a massive library kick right now. I just read The Arrival and Aama, Vol. 1: The Smell of Warm Dust. Just a few of the things I have checked out and need to read are Scars, A Contract with God by Will Eisner, and Tokyo Ghoul, tome 1. There are a great many more.

Of my comic purchases recently, I have read Buffy Season 11: Giles #1, Xena: Warrior Princess Vol. 4 #1, Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: Coronation #1, Abbott #2, and an international comic called The Lost Property, by Andy Poyiadgi.

I love everything from my comic shop with the exception of Xena. This is the first Xena comic I've tried out and I don't think I'm going to be continuing it. I heard (on here, thank you!) that Gabriella comes in during this issue, so I was hoping it would be a good jumping on point. It was, but I felt like issue was lacking in a lot. It was one angry man, his two idiot helpers, and Gabriella's boob socks. I know the show wasn't good about avoiding tropes (maybe it even created a few), so maybe I'm just looking for more modern (or less predictable) comics than the show would naturally lead to. Maybe I should go back to Volume 1.

The Lost Property was fantastic. I need to add it to the Goodreads database. Very indie, very unique. About a man who finds all the things he has lost since childhood at the "Lost Property" office in town and has to decide what to do with them.

Is this series still good? I have only been able to read Hawkeye: Kate Bishop, Vol. 1: Anchor Points so far.

Have you heard anything about a new Hawkeye title to take its place? I wonder what they're going to do next with it.

message 12: by Wayland (new)

Wayland Smith | 263 comments It was a decent read, Kate. As I recall, the ending said something about Kate Bishop will return in August, or something like that.

I found it at Vault of Midnight, amongst their local and indie publications. It was published in London by Nobrow.

I read Planetary, Volume 1: All Over the World and Other Stories, Planetary, Volume 2: The Fourth Man, and Planetary, Volume 3: Leaving the 20th Century on my trip to and from ECCC. Warren Ellis loves to write characters who are in the dark. I don't mind it, and John Cassaday's art get's better and better as the series goes on. I'm excited to read the fourth volume and the DC-universe crossover volume!

I also read Abbott #2 last night and it continues to be amazing . Everyone should check that series out.

YES. I thought issue 2 was even stronger than issue 1. This is a great book.

I just started Headlocked: The Last Territory by Mike Kingston & Michel Mulipola. It's a comic about pro wrestling based on the experiences of actual wrestlers, and it has a great mystery angle. I chatted with Kingston briefly at ECCC, and he is clearly a fan of both wrestling and comics. Digging it so far.

Once you forgoe sleep, you can read everything lol
My favorite by far was Hawkeye (you can read all of it except the latest 2 on comiXology unlimited btw) I love Kate and this book was too much fun and ended too soon

Thor God of Thunder is a reread after I went on a friends podcast and we discussed Jason Aaron, there is some stuff that ties back to that in the current Mighty Thor

Wayland Smith | 263 comments This week's comic book run, delayed a day by the snow:

Aquaman 34- the fight for Atlantis continues, this issue focusing on King Rath.
Avengers 685-the Hulk is back, and no one can stop the Hulk, because *yawn* he's the strongest.... blah blah blah
Iron Fist 78- following up on Damnation, which I didn't read, Fist is in Vegas for some reason...
Bombshells 14- the Suicide Squad vs Black Canary and the Bat Girls. More modern slang leaks in, which I find VERY distracting.
Thor 705- the battle with Mangog rages on, and things aren't looking good for Asgard or anyone in it
Ms. Marvel 28- with the Inventor out of control, with the real Ms. Marvel finally return?
Nightwing 41- the Judge story wraps up
Star Wars 45- the Rebels embark on Leia's desperate plan to get the Mon Cal to join their struggle
Tales of Suspense 103- is Hawkeye right, and the Black Widow is back, or is Winter Soldier correct about it being an impostor?
X-Men Gold- there's a fight at a women's prison and a lot of tentacle like vines. Not touching that line.

message 23: by Paul (new)

Paul (ohhipaulie) | 38 comments Black Panther Epic Collection: Panther's Rage - I picked this up in the big BP sale Marvel had back in February. Includes the original Fantastic Four story by Stan & Jack that introduces Black Panther, and Don McGregor's classic "Panther's Rage" story that introduces Killmonger.
Bizarro World - Bought this on a whim at my LCS last week. (The Jaime Hernández cover caught my eye, obviously.) Basically a "who's who" of indie and alternative comics creators doing short stories about DC characters.

Daniel | 265 comments Here is a few books from this week.

All Star Batman, Volume 3: The First Ally - Finally finished this Experiment with Scott Snyder, i think Vol 2 was my favorite, but this volume had a great focus on Alfred.
Black Hammer, Vol. 1: Secret Origins Holy shit is this book good! I cant wait for Vol 2
Deadman: Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love - read this for my Comic Book store's book club
Justice League of America Vol. 3: Panic in the Microverse - this really fills in my JL void becuase the other Justice Leagu book is not to my liking at the moment
My TOP PICK and recommendation.
Green Lantern: Earth One, Volume 1 - read this all in one sitting, it is so good (and available on Hoopla if you are hesitant on the investment) I cannot praise this enough.

message 29: by Kenny (new)

Kenny Hyman | 2 comments I'm reading the TPB of Spiderman 2099. I absolutely love the way Peter David wrote Miguel O'Hara: the diversity, the dialogue, the intrigue, etc. It's such a nostalgic romp reading the series again!

Tyler Stone: "Do you know what my father would say if he were alive today?"
Miguel: "Help. Help. Get me out of this grave?"
Tyler: "He'd say ... And, do you know why he'd say that?"
Miguel: "Because he likes the sound of his own voice?"

Winning.

message 30: by Wayland (new)

Wayland Smith | 263 comments Spidey 2099 was the best of that line, but that's no surprise. Peter David is amazing. I've been lucky enough to meet him and hear him speak a few times, and he's just as entertaining in person.

That exchange is a great example of his humor. Great call, Kenny.

Been reading a whole bunch of my physical books--and stuff from the Library:

- Naoki Urasawa's Monster, Volume 1
- ハイキュー!! 1 日向と影山 Haikyū!! 1
- ハイキュー!! 2
- Is This Guy For Real?: The Unbelievable Andy Kaufman
- Not Drunk Enough - Vol. 1

Plus, I finished Dept. H today. What a stellar series that was.

message 35: by Phil (new)

Phil | 169 comments I read Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, Vol. 1 for the group reading challenge. I'm glad this was included because it isn't the type of book I would normally read. I didn't dislike it, but I wasn't wowed by it either. Probably won't continue the series.

Reread Hawkeye, Volume 1: My Life as a Weapon. I liked this a lot more the second time around. Aja's art has grown on me a lot over the past couple years and I appreciated the story more.

Storm, Vol. 1: Make it Rain As a casual X-Men reader, I felt like this hit all the right notes for Storm. It's a bunch of loosely tied stories, and the last one left me feeling underwhelmed. Overall I enjoyed it.

Jim Shooter: Conversations Not a comic, but I chose to include it because of Shooter's long history with the industry. This was great from that perspective. It got a little repetitive because of the format. It's a collection of interviews with Shooter spanning roughly 40 years. Very interesting to see how career evolved.
