The box has small figures in it, which turn out to be live creatures who take them to another dimension through a portal in the house. The other dimension has crazy worlds, and they are being chased by bad creatures. They are trying to save the house/world? One of the alternate worlds allows them to breathe underwater. No idea on publication date, but not historical.

How many years ago did you read this? Anything about the cover?
Is it: The Diamond in the Window by Jane Langton?
Not sure about the cover-it was an audio book so I probably only saw it once when I got it from the library... Only a year or so ago that we listened to it, but I have no idea the publication date.

The old house they went to was not theirs, they actually got the box from the estate sale being held at the house. They take it home, and the little realistic statues inside "wake up" and start wreaking mischeif.
