Jeff Fuller | 51 comments I signed up right away. Canceled my Scribd sub. For me it's great because it's full of Amazon published authors (which I enjoy). It's also a lot easier for me to dip my toes into a new (to me) authors world before committing a lot of money.

message 2: by CatBookMom (new)

CatBookMom Don't think I'm going to buy in. I already get many ebooks and audiobooks for free via the LA Public Library, at no monthly cost, and I buy ebooks at Amazon and audiobooks at Audible very cheaply when I really want them. Since the major publishers aren't in this deal (yet), it's just not tempting enough.

message 3: by Callipygian (new)

Callipygian | 8 comments I didn't. For me, it'd only be a slight savings. I read a little over 2 books a month and not all of them are digital. Plus I have concerns this might be Amazon's way to get around future rulings on eOwnership. If you getting books on a system like this, they won't have to give you access to lend/share/sell books if a court ever demands it.

Aildiin | 150 comments Less than 10% of the books on my Amazon wish list are available in Kindle unlimited so it's not addressing my needs, I will be passing on that service...

message 5: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 34 comments I quickly searched some of the books on my to read list and didn't find a single one in the Kindle unlimited library.

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 179 comments I've already canceled

message 7: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 179 comments I don't think its worth if for one I am subscribed to audible so that audio thing isnt that appealing and also doesnt seem to be working. Also alot of the book on the unlimited list are between the 99-3.99 range so if you only see one or two on there a month you will end up loosing money. Also I am on a mission to read specific scifi and fantasy authors and almost none of them are available there.

message 8: by Caroline (new)

Caroline Greyling What exactly is the difference between kindle select and unlimited?

message 9: by Sandi (last edited Jul 25, 2014 10:35AM) (new)

Sandi (sandikal) | 1212 comments I'm thinking about it. I heard that if you sign up for Kindle Unlimited, the welcome e-mail will include a code for an Audible credit, and you'll get one credit for each of the 3 months. Considering that on my platinum plan, credits run about $11.50 each, it might be worth it to sign up for 3 months. That would mean 3 credits for $20.00 even if I never read a book from the service.

Since the first month is free, there's really nothing to lose. I signed up for the free month of Prime around Thanksgiving. Got free two-day shipping on all my Christmas purchases.

message 10: by Jeff (new)

Jeff Fuller | 51 comments Not 3 credits but a 3 month membership:
Thousands of Kindle Unlimited titles also come with free professionally narrated Audible audiobooks. Whenever you see the "With Narration" icon, you can switch seamlessly between reading and listening on your Kindle tablet or free Kindle reading app, without ever losing your place. Additionally, your Kindle Unlimited membership includes a complimentary 3-month Audible membership with access to over 150,000 titles.

message 11: by Sandi (new)

Sandi (sandikal) | 1212 comments Oooo. I just did it. I just had to click through a link in the e-mail and a credit was added to my Audible account. (I had already linked my Audible and Amazon accounts for Whispersync.)

message 12: by Sandi (new)

Sandi (sandikal) | 1212 comments I just got the sequel to Dawn through Kindle Unlimited.

I considered it three credits because I already have an Audible membership. A lot of times when they have these promotions, you can't take advantage of it if you already have an Audible subscription. This basically adds a credit a month to your account for three months.

message 14: by Jeff (new)

Jeff Fuller | 51 comments Thanks for posting this Sandi. I never would have thought to click through on it, now I have an extra credit as well. Plus I like the Unlimited service. I buy a lot of these titles, the independent author's, self published books. Stuff from 47 North, I really like. I don't need to own it as I don't often re-read books, there are a few exceptions, but I will worry about that in 10 years (which is how long it usually takes).

message 15: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 179 comments Thinking about Prime since I'm a student I will get it for $45 dollars for 4 years straight. I have to screen a lot of shows and movies for my degree so I think it would be well worth it not to mention I can purchase my school books from them and save money. hmm. Only thing is I will have to give up my Netflix as its a lil more expensive when you add it all up for the year but my brothers also use my netlfix and I don't think they can use my Amazon Prime its not automatically on there tv and smart devices like hulu and netflix. What do you all think?

message 16: by Jeff (new)

Jeff Fuller | 51 comments amazon prime works on a lot of boxes and tablets.

message 17: by Michele (last edited Jul 25, 2014 02:22PM) (new)

Michele | 1154 comments There is a list somewhere on the Amazon site where you can check which devices work with it. Anyone can use your account if they hage a device that is supported. My tablet doesn't, but I watch on my laptop hooked up to my tv. I think the Roku works with it, Chromecast doesn't (or didn't last time I checked).

Prime is ok, but a lot of the movies/tv shows available for streaming still cost extra on top of the Prime fee, which irritates me. Still, you can pay for a whole season of, for example, Game of Thrones for $35 (or something can't remember exact amount), which is about how much you'd pay for 3 months of HBO.

I think Netflix has more stuff included in the basic amount, or at least more stuff I'm interested in, but not any HBO stuff. It's frustrating to search through Netflix, Prime and Hulu Plus looking for the stuff I want but getting all 3 is still cheaper than most cable so there ya go.

I just got rid of my Directv, so I'm cable-less for now and exploring options.

What you have to still pay to view a season? then whats the point? If I still have to pay for the shows I need to watch then I'm going to ask for a refund. Thats not cool. I can only have one either Netflix or Prime.

message 19: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 179 comments Jeff wrote: "amazon prime works on a lot of boxes and tablets."

They don't own a tablet or a computer he watches my netflix on his xbox. I haven't heard of prime being available on xbox yet I don't even know if it ever would be considering that Microsoft is trying to build a whole "media" experience and will probably start offering their own similar model of netflix/prime.

message 20: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 179 comments I went ahead and joined thanks for the info everyone! I will give it a couple weeks to see how it goes.

message 21: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 179 comments okay I'm back how do I check books out on prime?

message 22: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1 comments Yeah, I signed up for the free month of kindle unlimited. Almost immediately I like it more than Oyster, which I have been using for a couple of months. I don't necessarily think I do or would use either of them to specifically search for books on my to read list, but more for finding new books that seem interesting.

I know I've heard a lot of people saying that it's like "charging $10/month for a library card with less selection". To be honest, my public library isn't within walking distance, doesn't have ebooks, and has an extremely small selection of fantasy and sci-fi.

At any rate, we'll see at the end of the free month if I want to continue with kindle unlimited.

message 23: by Michele (new)

Michele | 1154 comments Chakara - IF you have a Kindle device you can use Prime for 1 book a month, I believe. Just go to a book's page and it will tell you if the book is able to be borrowed through Prime or the new Unlimited (if you signed up for the free month its as many books as you want and you can use the app on any device). I know there are instructions on the Amazon site, you'll have to find them for a better walkthru.

message 24: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 179 comments thanks for the help Michele I went ahead an contacted customer support and they informed me I had to use my kindle. I usually use my Android device because I read at night but I will give it a try. :)

message 25: by Sky (new)

Sky | 665 comments Yeah, I was confused too Chakara. All the prime borrow for free links were replaced by "kindle unlimited" links if you browsed from the PC, leading me to think they were all replaced by Kindle Unlimited. But if you browse via your kindle (I use Harry Potter + TDH to test), you'll see the borrrow for free link still active.

message 26: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 179 comments Yes all of mines still say Kindle Unlimited borrow for free but I was informed by customer rep that that will fade after the 17th when the free trail ends.

They also informed me that Kindle Unlimited has more books available than prime. I'm confused because yes you do get the audio with certain Kindle Unlimited books but 10 + 12 months is 120 and thats all you get.

With prime I pay 50 a year for students if I wasnt it would be 100 and it seems you get so much more for your money.

message 27: by Amy (new)

Amy (leafybear) | 4 comments For what it's worth, kindle unlimited looks like a much better deal if you don't have a public library nearby that stocks popular fiction. The nearest library for me is a small collection of non fiction and newspapers, so I'm definitely going to try unlimited.

David Newhall | 41 comments Jennifer wrote: "To be honest, my public library isn't within walking distance, doesn't have ebooks, ..."

If your profile is correct, your local library does offer Overdrive ebooks - your tax dollars at work.

I have cards from 7 different library systems and may still try Amazon Unlimited. It's good to have choices.

Amazon Prime is available for the Xbox (or at least it was. TV died and haven't bought a replacement so it has been a few months since I checked). Don't know if I will pull the trigger on unlimited. Slow reader and I already have a pile waiting.

So far I think its really helping me read faster but I just don't have the money to buy all of these extra subscriptions from Amazon. If the prime members automatically got the unlimited books it would be a great add on. I may cancel my audible because I pay 14 a month and if I want the book along with the audio I have to ay for it separately. With Unlimited you automatically get the audio for some of the books when you press to read free for unlimited. I did this with Dawn and so far its doubled my reading pages in less time. When ever I feel like putting the book down or multi tasking I just turn on the audio and it picks right up.

Oh just found out its not compatible with my tablet . I think the samsung tablets are very popular so I don't know why. But Netflix is compatible.

Or if you wait for deals and price drops, you can buy a whole season of Game of Thrones on DVD or Blu Ray for much cheaper. ;)

Yes, but then I'd need a blu ray player. I like the amazon videos because I can watch on my roku, tablet, or laptop with no effort.

Stephen Ivy | 25 comments I looked for the next six books on my reading list and none were part of unlimited. Maybe it will be worth it one day, but not now.

message 38: by Richard (new)

Richard Guion (giantsizegeek) | 158 comments I signed up for the free KU trial. At first, I was disappointed at the selection, but it's gotten better - I think they added more stuff. Chuck Wendig's Under the Empyrean Sky is on KU - if you add that you will get the audible whispersync version as well. Audible whispersync stuff is slowly getting added. Also, check out all of the Kindles Singles material - I am reading a lot of short work there that I probably never would have paid for separately.

Agree. What good is 600,000 titles if none of the books are any good? I don't expect free Stephen King book or anything, but come on.....I suspect a lot of titles on there could be had for free anyway.

message 41: by Paolo (new)

Paolo Is there a limit to the number of books one can avail of using Kindle Unlimited?

What if I try Kindle Unlimited for free for 30 days, then "hoard" hundreds of books, and then cancel the subscription after a month? What happens to all the free books one gets while on free trial?

Thanks!

message 42: by Richard (new)

Richard Guion (giantsizegeek) | 158 comments I found out part of the answer. I was loading up on Kindles Singles and then I hit the limit: you can only have 10 KU books in your collection. You have to return 1 of the books, through the Manage Kindle page, to pick up another one.

If you cancel KU - I don't know but I imagine that all the books your borrowed are zapped from your Kindle library. Now if you were sneaky and took a Kindle Paperwhite, turned off the Wifi before canceling, you might keep those books for a while. But on the Kindle apps - they are probably gone right away.

message 43: by Paolo (new)

Paolo Ah! That explains it :) There had to be a catch. Thanks.
