Nicole D. | 1573 comments If the intention of this book was to prove how boring it is to be an FBI agent, it succeeded. I guess I applaud the effort to tell the story -particularly the individual stories of the victims, but it was mind-numbingly dull. I almost didn't finish.

edited to add: Important story - just not well told from my perspective.

SPOILER ALERT:

White people were murdering brown people, with the help of white people in power, so that white people could get the oil rites of the brown people. Surprised? I know.

END SPOILER

I'm sure a Wikipedia article would have given me the upshot of this story and I could have spared myself. No idea how this made best of lists in '17.

Amy | 12953 comments You haven’t had much luck with your picks recently. Although I do love reading your negative reviews.

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Ah, I do love your negative reviews. I will not read this one. I read your spoiler, I feel like I got the take-away message.

Booknblues | 12154 comments Before everyone puts it off their list, I would like to say that I did not find it boring at all. I see why it was a top seller and because of the spoiler I think it is an important read.

Cynda I am sorry you didn't like the book. Some books appeal while others do not appeal no matter how "worthwhile" they are.
This book showed me that after almost a century of federally-sanctioned annihilation that the same federal government decided to protect Amerindan lives. As a news reporter, David Gann did well to write something between news reporting and history writing. This merge shows clearly in the photos chosen. He includes enough photos so that I never have to google for information. He has provided it all.

Personal note: My dad's paternal grandmother was Amerindian here in South Texas. Her people were virtually alienated. There is no reservation of her people. She was called "la india", "the Indian woman".

Thank you Cynda, for sharing that.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8444 comments I listened to the audiobook for this one (narrated by Will Patton, Ann Marie Lee, and Danny Campbell. I was definitely not bored, but do feel it was somewhat repetitive. 4**** from me.

Nicole D. | 1573 comments I realize for those who don't know me my spoiler may sound flip. I'm definitely on the side of the "brown people" I mentioned and agree that this is an important story to tell. I don't think it was told well.

Nicole D. | 1573 comments Cynda, I did the audio so didn't get to see the photos.

Cynda Dear Nicole. I just wanted to have my say. So I said it, and we are just fine as we were 2 days ago.
