Is it just me or does the cover model look pregnant? So many things wrong with this! LOL

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ I do think Pan could have made a little effort.

Me too! Trying to remember why I didn't like it -- I think it was because of all the Regency law and order, including and especially the thieves' cant. But there's less of it in this than in other Heyers. What were you thinking, young Elza?

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments And the stammering man - what a selfish, self-centered creep! I much prefer the professional villains.

message 105: by Susan in NC (new)

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 4147 comments Good point Karlyne- and Georgina Sutton’s acting of Jimmy Yarde, Captain Trimble and even the sleazy Bev were spot on, and added to the laughs in the audiobook.

message 106: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments I just realized this morning why I'm liking Pen so much this time around. She's reminding me so much of grandgirl #3 (who, at 13, might not have been around last read) that it's adding a whole new level of enjoyment. She's also the only guinea-gold, wavy haired one, too. And -wait for it - her eyes are grey.

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments Hey everybody! I lost power for a few days, but the electricity is back on and it feels so good to be able to read the discussions in this thread! It feels like a million years, haha!

I liked the book even more this read, Pen is just so likable.

Lol - just make sure she’s not climbing out of windows; and if so, make sure the sheets are long enough! She doesn’t have a cousin with a face like a fish, does she? (Not on your side of the family, of course...)

Welcome back! I’m enjoying Pen more this time around, like the very first time I read it.

message 110: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) I feel like Heyer really captures that moment in adolescence where the preoccupations of childhood start to give way to more adult points of view. I adore Pen, her no-nonsense attitudes juxtaposed against her love of adventure and both of those sitting in tension with the emerging woman. As a former tomboy myself, I remember the contradictory feelings and thoughts jostling around in my head at her age. Heyer's portrayal is spot on!

message 111: by Susan in NC (new)

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 4147 comments Abigail, beautifully expressed, thank you!

No fish on this side!

I almost choked on my salad when Richard told the Major that Pen was "alas, old in sin."

message 114: by Susan in NC (last edited Mar 04, 2018 12:54PM) (new)

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 4147 comments I loved that, and the fact that Pen practiced her grumpy, moody slouch - hello, timeless teen angst! With the audiobook, I kept visualizing the scenes - this would make a fun film (I know, several Heyer books would).

message 115: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments Richard's sense of humor is catapulting him up my list of heroes.

Teresa | 2190 comments Shock!! Horror!! Went to my shelf last night to get my copy and and and ''it wasn't there''!!!!! I don't know what happened to it. I know I had all Heyer's books so it's a mystery. So I'll have to purchase and hope I get enough time to read it for the month.

Oh, nuts!

message 119: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments Abigail, I agree! Pen's intrinsic personality is what makes this book sparkle. She's perceptive, quick in thought and action, practical and funny. I'm becoming very fond of her.

I lost Venetia for a year or so, and then it just reappeared as though it had never been lost. Pixies, I think.

message 122: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 2190 comments That wouldn't surprise me here Karlyne. It's a newly built house but we think we have a visitor who appears every so often. We've all seen something now but there doesn't seem to be any harm in it.

Margaret | 613 comments Sounds like gaspermites to me. A college friend told me about them; they're relatives of gremlins, apparently, that steal items and don't give them back until you've bought a new one. :)

Belinda | 220 comments Hi all. I've just been mining Jennifer Kloester bio for context:
- this was written during world war II,
- GH was worried sick about her brother Boris,
- She and ronald got terrible news that his father Charles Leslie was killed in action,
- food and paper rationing
- she was struggling with a detective story - christmas party that she put aside to do the corinthian, and
- she was struggling with ill health.

Perhaps that explains why its so light and fluffy?

I think it was his brother, who was called Leslie, who was killed during this time?
Terrible times, and I don't know how she did it!

Kim Kaso | 511 comments I have not read this in ages, and am enjoying it ever so much. Considering when she wrote it, I think a bit of nonsense and fluff were just what was needed. The world coming out of 1939 into 1940 was a dark place, everyone needed a smile. I can relate.

Yes, indeed, I’ve got another surgery scheduled in April, I’ll keep this one cued up on the iPhone for a listen in case my eyes are a bit wonky. And see if I can find Cotillion, maybe - I’ve never listened to that, I imagine it would be fun!

Amy (aggieamy) | 422 comments I can't tell you what a kick I'm getting out of all the crazy outdated and strange book covers. There's some really doozies there!

message 148: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 2190 comments I don't know if I'm going to make this month's read, In fact I don't know how often I'm even going to be on here for the moment. As well as all my usual running around, my mother is in hospital and I'm trying to be in and out there as much as possible too. I'm exhausted and haven't even the energy to pick up a book these nights. I'll get back as soon as I can because I miss the chat and comments and recommendations.

message 149: by Susan in NC (last edited Mar 08, 2018 01:06PM) (new)

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 4147 comments Teresa - so sorry, I’ve been there with my mum and know how you feel like a chicken with it’s head cut off, running back and forth; sending positive energy your way! If you are too tired to read, may I recommend audiobooks? I’ve tried a few with Heyer and Trollope, and they are delightful- like your own personal radio drama! Shut your eyes and enjoy. Chin up, love, take care of yourself and family, we’ll be here when you get back...;)

message 150: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 2190 comments Thanks Susan and I'll be thinking of you next month.
