Looking for a book set in the future, think the Earth had been pretty much destroyed and the main character drove a machine they called a spider due to its appearance, mended great slashes in the Earth I think with steel cables.

He then discovered a VR type company where you could inhabit a body in a game, similar to Avatar, he played a medieval fantasy game as a warrior and fell in love (maybe with two sisters?!).

Any help massively appreciated, its been driving me mental for years!
