Children's Picture Book With A Sad Ending! I'm pretty sure the characters are mice, and they live on an island.

When I was in elementary school my teacher read this book to us, so it's been awhile since I've read it. This is all I remember. I'm pretty sure the characters are mice, and they live on an island. something happens maybe like a bad storm and everyone dies except the main character. My teacher read this to use to show that not all good books have happy ending.

That could possibly be it, it came out in 1996. The book was read to me between 2000-2001. I read the Milo book, and the sad ending seems right. I'm just not 100% sure, I'm not getting the "That's It!" feeling.
