Sandra | 139 comments Has anyone in the group ever visited Monk's House? I plan to in June and I have a rather odd question about it.

Oh yes, I love Monk's House above all things. Here are my photos:

What is your question? (I hope it really is odd.)

Sandra | 139 comments It's about the privy in the garden, as it says on the web site.
Apparently there's no indoor toilet for visitors to use. I live in the U.S. and an outdoor privy here brings to mind outhouses with crescent moons carved on the door.

I tend to use the bathroom a lot (diabetic) so I'm wondering how primitive is said privy?

I'm off to check out your photos!

Silvio111 | 472 comments Oh, I can't wait to hear the answer to this one. Sarah, it is lucky you have blazed the trail...

The privy can't be any worse than those Port-a-Johns they put at music festivals...probably a lot more aesthetically pleasing. Maybe with beautiful paintings inside the door?

Shoot, actually I didn't use the bathroom when I was there, so I can't answer the question. If it doesn't suit, there's a pub five minutes walk down the road.

As to the photos, it seems a bunch of them have gone missing. Flickr is notorious for disappearing photos. Sigh.

Oh dear, re: the missing photos. Sorry to hear that!

I emailed Monk's House and they very nicely sent me three photos of the privy. It has a sink and flush toilet. All mod cons! It's a little brick structure.

They also mentioned it's not the one Leonard and Virginia used when they lived there.

No such luck on the paintings. It's pretty plain inside. See my reply to Sarah.

They're good people at Monk's House. Are you renting a car?

Goodness me, no. I'm not a good driver, much less in the UK!
The Tourist Info Centre sent me a brochure with a title s/thing like "Out and About in Sussex w/o a Car". I'm going to be taking the bus to Charleston, then probably to Berwick Church, as I don't think I can walk 3 miles. I'm not really in condition!

I found out there are no buses on Sunday, and since I'll only be there Fri-Wed., in order to see Monk's House I'll need to take a taxi.

Last year I took a taxi to Charleston and I can recommend the driver/service if anyone wants to know.

Silvio111 | 472 comments A taxi driver would probably tell you lots of interesting stuff. Short of sitting in a pub, it's probably the best source!

Keeping in mind I haven't been to Monk's House in 8 years: My online research had told me there was a bus from Rodmell to Lewes. Yet when I got to Rodmell, I found only a weather beaten disused shelter and when I asked the docents about the bus to Lewes, they looked confused and said a bus hadn't run there in years. One of them very kindly gave me a lift into town as the bridge to nearby Southease Station was closed for repairs. Perhaps a taxi is best!

Driving in Britain looks terrifying with the multi-lane roundabouts and curvy narrow country lanes that lorries whip down.

I hope you will share your photos!

I certainly will share them. I usually post everything to flickr. I take a lot of pictures so it takes me a while to download and resize them.

Great! Looking forward to seeing them. I have a flickr, I think I posted the address somewhere above.

Here's a neat recent video tour of Monk's House:
