I might be a bit late to this party. I’m starting a buddy read with Sadie and Michael Patrick Hicks. But I’ll try to catch up :)
I'm in.Another curious Amazon conundrum. The hardcover is cheaper than the paperback which is cheaper than the Kindle version.
One of these days, I'll figure that out.
Edward wrote: "this is weird, yes, but I'm enjoying every word so far 😁"Same, for sure. I'm curious to see where it goes.
Edward wrote: "I was sure someone was gonna die in that ASSASSIN chapter. how's everyone liking it so far? thoughts on book one?"Just finished book one and I’m really liking it so far. It’s different than anything I’ve ever read before but in a good way.
It's quite unique, which I appreciate. It also feels authentic which I always appreciate. That assassin portion came out of nowhere and really surprised me. I'm glad no one died.
Edward wrote: "me too JB. anybody catching John Irving vibes from this? it reminds me of Irving's mid-career stuff, like THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP and A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY. so damn good so dar"
I've not read or listened to any Irving. So I can't say.
Edward wrote: "stopping at chapter 8 Educating the Chick tonight. I'll probably do about 30-40 pages a night until we're done. that'll make this a ten or eleven day read 😁I plan on reading ABOMINABLE by Dan Sim..."
I'm going to be listening until about three or four in the morning to keep up with you all. Ya'll read faster than I listen. lol. As for Abominable, I'm down for that.
Edward wrote: "stopping at chapter 8 Educating the Chick tonight. I'll probably do about 30-40 pages a night until we're done. that'll make this a ten or eleven day read 😁I plan on reading ABOMINABLE by Dan Sim..."
Also, when the book is done, are we gonna palaver about the book, or comment during the reading? Just curious.
Just wrapping up Book One. I agree with the John Irving vibe, but I'm getting first decade--like Hotel New Hampshire and Garp. Not so much Owen Meany, but that was 10 years after those two.
My copy is on its way to my local library AAAANNNDDD I found it on downloadable audio through RBdigital. Late to the party but I’m excited!
This is one of those stories that doesn't seem to have an overall point, yet I love it. The cast is wonderfully strange.
Edward wrote: "I love the family dynamic. quickly falling in love with the whole group. I'm sure this will all end in tragedy tho. Dunn is planning to rip out our hearts and shit in the cavity. I know it..."Same here. It's a wonferful family dynamic. And I agree, it is definitely building up to a tragic ending. It's building up for it for sure.
Anybody think she's waiting a bit too long for character development, specifically the male characters? Didn't hear a word from Arty until Book 2 and at the 25% mark, Chick hasn't gotten much press at all.Good ride so far, though. If I could keep my eyes open later at night I'd be a lot further along.
Whoa... Did I never speak too soon... Arty and Chick are pretty much it at this point. The whole family dynamic is being played out perfectly.
Don wrote: "Whoa... Did I never speak too soon... Arty and Chick are pretty much it at this point. The whole family dynamic is being played out perfectly."It only gets weirder, and oddly enough, more endearing. I'm enjoying this ride.
Had to work a double shift yesterday so I was too tired to read. Picking it back up tonight at chapter six. I’ll try to catch up to you guys! 😊
Two more chapters in Book II - should be starting on Book Three tonight if I can keep my eyes open. I've developed this curious malady of only being able to read in bed and by the time I go to bed, I'm dead tired.
Edward wrote: "I read in bed mostly too unless it's nice outside then I'm out on the porch 😁"Same here. I was up till four last night reading Song of Susannah. Such a good book.
Edward wrote: "book three has really short chapters, compared to the earlier chapters, and it makes the book really hard to put down.I new Arty and Chick were gonna be a major part of this story, but I never sa..."
Me neither, and the way the cult takes shape (literally and figuratively) is fascinating.
Edward wrote: "Vern's chapter is both horrific and hilarious. his aim! lololololol!!!!"He put a whole new spin on the term 'facial'
Okay, you two - enough with the spoilers. Some of us don't read very quickly with a belly full of Jameson's! ;)
Yeah same. Right now I'm honestly struggling with this book - I'm having a very difficult time understanding the setting and narrator? I made it to chapter 4. But now I must find out about this "facial" lol!
Edward wrote: "stopping at chapter 20 tonight. next chapter is 30 pages and I don't have it in me to read 60 pages of this today. I can only read so much of Dunn's brand of crazy at a time lol"Glad I’m not the only one that has to read this book slowly. It’s all over the place! That chapter about Miss Lick blew my mind. Lol
Book 3's got me bogged down. Can't seem to get past the first couple of pages.I another topic, I was fascinated to learn that Katherine Dunne was also a highly respected boxing sportswriter.
Edward wrote: "just as a heads up. my mother is having eye surgery tomorrow and I'll have nothing else to do in the waiting room other than read somill likely be done with this tomorrow. if you're reading slower,..."Good luck with everything, hope the surgery goes well.
J.B. wrote: "Edward wrote: "just as a heads up. my mother is having eye surgery tomorrow and I'll have nothing else to do in the waiting room other than read somill likely be done with this tomorrow. if you're ..."I’m not sure if I’m going to finish the book or not but I hope all goes well with your Mom tomorrow. 🙂
Edward wrote: "me too JB. anybody catching John Irving vibes from this? it reminds me of Irving's mid-career stuff, like THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP and A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY. so damn good so dar"
Yes. It hs tht vibe.
I'm wayyyyy behind you, but I am really enjoying it! This is the type of book I can't wait to read ya know?
Edward wrote: "Spoiler discussion thread has been created. Whether you finish it or not, feel free to stop by and chat. I can understand why some will DNF the book, but for me it worked on every level. Thanks for..."I got the book, so I'll be reading along this time. Nearing the end of Geek Love. Loving it.
Edward wrote: "Spoiler discussion thread has been created. Whether you finish it or not, feel free to stop by and chat. I can understand why some will DNF the book, but for me it worked on every level. Thanks for..."Is there a link to the discussion thread?
The middle third was a struggle, but I'm glad I hung with it because along about page 200 it picks up the pace it started out with and from then on, it's "Katie, bar the door."
I initially thought the whole cult thing was ridiculous and then I remembered some of the TV preachers who used to be on late at night; Ernest Angely, Peter Popoff, Jimmy Swaggart, Reverend Ike, and I was like, "Oh, yeah...a cult of dismemberment-happy clowns following a sideshow freak? Welcome to America."
Don wrote: "I initially thought the whole cult thing was ridiculous and then I remembered some of the TV preachers who used to be on late at night; Ernest Angely, Peter Popoff, Jimmy Swaggart, Reverend Ike, an..."I did as well, only to remember how all those people years ago committed suicide for that preacher. As for the dismemberment thing, I wasn't at all surprised about that as there is a real fetish out there with people wanting to be handicapped in that manner.
J.B. wrote: "Don wrote: "I initially thought the whole cult thing was ridiculous and then I remembered some of the TV preachers who used to be on late at night; Ernest Angely, Peter Popoff, Jimmy Swaggart, Reve..."You're kidding... It's a real thing? Oh, man, what a world--they ought to sell tickets.
Don wrote: "J.B. wrote: "Don wrote: "I initially thought the whole cult thing was ridiculous and then I remembered some of the TV preachers who used to be on late at night; Ernest Angely, Peter Popoff, Jimmy S..."Yeah, it's supposedly a rare psychological condition called body integrity identity disorder, where the sufferer desires to amputate a healthy limb. But some people think that they simply want to unique and to stand out, or, to garner sympathy.
