Shannon | 63 comments Alphabetical by author and then by title within the author's section. I don't do genre.

Ellen (elliearcher) I must be an addict to be so fascinated by this thread. :)

Lol... me too Ellie. This is good stuff. It's nice to see what the other book nuts in the world are up to.

Btw, I like to organize by genre first then authors but I like to arrange the books by height (or, more accurately, in the most aesthetically pleasing way) so I disregard alphabetical. I also have several small book areas so I might have two or three places of one genre or another - my favorites being the most prominently displayed of course. :^)

Renee Minium (minium785) | 4 comments I've been trying to alphabetize, but it's becoming difficult since i books stored in every room of my house. I may try filing them by location, sort of like the person with the rubbermaid system. I found LT before GR--I'll have to check out all the features on GR.

message 108: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I see-I found GR before LT. It's all in the timing I guess :D

T (twoo) | 16 comments "In piles" came to my mind. TBR. Read. Collector. Cousins. Non-scaries for friends. Scaries for friends. Donate.

I'm alphabetically-challenged, as has been proven many times over on GR....I'd never make it ito alpha-order. LOL....

Thom Swennes (Yorrick) | 592 comments I often have a problem with space and have thought about getting an e-reader but I don't think it would keep me from buying regular books. I suppose I'm proud of my book collection. Unfortunatly my children aren't as attracted to books as I am. That could be why I look for people outside of my circle that have like interests.
Some of my best friends pride temselves on not reading a single book since school. I don't press the point but can't imagine life without the rest and comfort reading gives me. As an American in Europe I read different languages at work but my home library is almost exclusivly English.

I put the different writers together as generally the subject matter follows. I don't have a card or file system but have a general idea where I should look.

message 112: by Lotone67 (new)

Lotone67 | 1 comments I just organize loosely by fiction & nonfiction. Nonfiction are grouped by subject...gardening, fishing, home improvement. Fiction is a free for all with books highest on my to read list occupying a couple of shelves. And of course I have the bibliophile's obligatory pile-o-books on the nightstand.

message 113: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Peacock (hewhocutsdown) I sort by an odd combination of theme/author and aesthetics. I'd rather remove from a shelf a book that clashes with its neighbors, even though it's thematically consistent or by the same author.

message 114: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Peacock (hewhocutsdown) This also means I try to get common editions of like books; for example, I'm trading my Penguin Classics version of Gilles Deleuze's Anti-Oedipus for the Minnesota Press edition, to match A Thousand Plateaus. Yes, I'm mildly insane.

Thom Swennes (Yorrick) | 592 comments I wonder if there are people out there like me that have multiple copies of the same books? Joseph Heller's Catch 22 is one of the best books I've ever read. I have at least four copies of it as I tend to wear them out.

I have two copies of Lousia May Alcott's A Long Fatal Love Chase. I will be grabbing more if I find them!

One of the things I like to collect is multiple copies of my favorite titles, primarily for the illustrations. For example, I have four copies each of Treasure Island and Kidnapped and three copies of Huckleberry Finn.

My daughetr is 4 yrs old and she knows you need to respect books and has never even as a younger child ripped abook, stood on a book

It is terrible the vandalisim of a book. i hate it when someone has borrowed a book and returns it in a bad state. I once lent a book to a frien (ish) a non reader. Perfect condition when I have it to her (her mum who is a reader had read it) it came back with the dist juscket ripped , looked like cigerette burns. i was soooo upset and horrified and never again

can you learn to speed read? or it just happens? and how much do you absorb and recall later?

message 121: by Traci (new)

Traci | 9 comments I think the system is different for everyone. I dont really want to use my e-reader to replace my books, one each book on the e-reader is going to probably cost you money! I keep an inventory and because I have outgrown 2 book shelves, I now buy those big colorful plastic containers and color code them according, so I know exactly where a particular book is, it works well for me.

message 122: by Ronald (new)

Ronald I load them all onto calibre. Or try and purcahse a book and read it within the week. Very satisfying.

message 124: by Linda (new)

Linda Rowland | 16 comments There is a book I buy every time I find it. Journey by Michener. It is such a different book, only a couple of hundred pages, but a good story. I buy them and give them away. I do not have multiples except when I buy one I forgot that I have on the shelf.
I have started a shelf for book club upcoming reads.

message 125: by Jennifer C (new)

Jennifer C For being such an organized, type A personality, my books are all over the place. I only have the most basic organization: one set of shelves for books I read, another set for those I haven't read yet and all my Julie Garwood Books (my favorite author) are together on one shelf. Oh - my Harry Potter books are on their own shelf all together as well.

You are so correct. I have a copy of Tom Sawyer I treasure because the illustrations are by Norman Rockwell, who is one of my favorite graphic artists.
