A young man 13-15 in the great depression drops out of school and goes on some kind of road trip in the midwest with a girl and her little brother. The girl is a fellow classmate of his and at some point, they encounter midwest outlaw Pretty Boy Floyd for some reason. At the end, the girl leaves the little brother with the young man and she goes on her own journey. I read this sometime around 2014 I believe possibly 2015.
